The car for today is the Hot Wheels '67 Shelby GT 500.

The Shelby Mustang is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang, built by Ford from 1968 through 1970. The 1965, 1966 and 1967 Shelby's were a series of Ford Mustangs which were specially modified by Carroll Shelby's company and sold under the name Shelby GT.1965 Shelby GT 350 From 1968 the model became the Shelby Cobra GT. The program was factory-sponsored by Ford to compete with the Corvette, also factory-sponsored by Chevrolet, neither of which could be built for the sales price charged.

The 1967 Shelby Mustangs distinguished themselves from their more plain Ford cousins with elaborate use of fiberglass. A larger fiberglass nose was fitted, together with fiberglass hood, fenders and trunk lid. The hood featured an intimidating dual air intake scoop and the cut-off rear end showed an angular spoiler which blended into the rear fenders. The plastic rear roof windows gave way to impressive air-extraction scoops. A protruding lower front spoiler was a popular extra.

For 1967, the GT 350 carried over the K-Code high performance 289 with a 'COBRA' aluminum hi-rise. The GT 500 was added to the lineup, equipped with the 428 Police Interceptor. These later cars carried over few of the performance modifications of the 1965-66 GT350s, although they did feature more cosmetic changes. In September 1967, production was moved to the A.O. Smith Company of Ionia, Michigan, under Ford control. Shelby had very little involvement after this time. As Shelby's two-seat Cobra sports car production ended in 1967, the Cobra name was applied to Shelby Mustangs for the first time in 1968. In February 1968, the GT500KR "King of the Road" debuted; under the hood was a 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 which was conservatively rated at 335 horsepower.

This is one of my top 5 recent HW releases...the color combo is great, and nice detail on the side tampos.

If you have this one, put a bright light on it or take it out in the sunlight...the metallic green really stands out.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Another bit of proof that Hot Wheels can make some pretty good "less than a buck" mainlines, if they want to listen to the adult buyers. I've stashed away a dozen of these.
