Another neat documentary I watch recently was all about hthe Trabant, east Germany's contribution to the automobile industry. These things are almost cult status in Europe, They have car conventions where every one who owns a Trabby comes, Shows off how they restored it, or customized it, or whatever they did to it. Some one even made a Trabby Limousine.

Here is a couple of pics of Maisto's Trabant

I occasionally see them at car shows in the UK< but there isn't as much of a following for them here as there is in Germany. They were built solidly like most other East German cars but they were all awful.

I actually saw one here, right after the wall came down. It was parked by the main gate at the Naval Academy in Annapolis- a c. 1960 Trabant (with the bubble top roof) in powder blue. I snapped pics, but they can't be found now.

No sheet metal, by the way- more like sheet ROCK!

I'm sorry I wasn't around to see the owner drive off...I would've liked to see the oily smoke and the fireworks. I'm sure that he never would've gotten a proper registration for it-emissions issues. Probably in a museum someplace.

I have a neon green one I found at an antique store several years ago. It looks good in white too.

Maisto made a set of them in different colors- blue, green, white, and I forget the other color but I snapped up all four at a toy show in Wayne, NJ last year!
