2010 Clark County Fair Derby #2; Marshall, IL

Support your local demo derby.

The 2nd derby of the fair week at Marshall showed slighter better car counts than from last Saturday. In all, around 25 full size and 18 compacts competed tonight. They ran 4 full size qualifying heats w/3 going to the feature and the compacts ran in a shot feature derby. Only two cars made it out for the big car feature so 14 total competed for the $1,000 first place prize in the big car class. Of the full size cars, I'd say only 2 or 3 were 'under built' for this show. Everyone else had high performance, read big $ motors, and were fully welded up for this show.

After/during the first heat a monsoon like storm came through the fairgrounds and turned the track into a mud bog pit. Action was delayed half an hour for a stoppage due to flooding and thunderstorm warnings issued for the county. At least they saved $ on water for the track! :P

Derbies in this issue continue to change drastically. Car counts keep going down, but the ones that are showing up have a crap load of money invested in drivetrains, bumpers, and wheels. The typical derby engine that's half way tuned up will set guys back $2,000. Several drivers, based on the throaty snarl of their engines alone, had $4,000+ in just the engines. We are now seeing $10,000 derby cars. You can see where the weekend warrior gets discouraged easily. Thus I think this is the reason why Marshall ends up with so many compact entires year in and year out. They effectively pay the same for compacts as they do full size, 1st place gets $1,000 like the full size class. That said the full size class cars of today can put on wicked shows with 400+ horsepower engines which can run for 30+ minutes without coolant.

Pretty good derby overall. Was much better than the 1st one that lasted all of 65 minutes. The track was literally a foot deep with mud by the end of the feature. Had this been a stock show with stock motors, doubt they would have made it to the track!

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Looks like an exciting derby! The two door Corsica is actually a Beretta. Why Chevrolet marketed the coupes and sedans of the same car as different models is beyond me (but they did the same for the Lumina and Monte Carlo as well).
