Support your local demo derby.

The derby down at Newton is a 40 mile drive south of where I live. This year the fairboard upped the total purse in excess of $6,000 spread over 4 classes. The full size class paid $2,000 for 1st, $1,000 for 2nd and $500 for 3rd making it among the highest paying county fair derbies in downstate. Trucks paid $700 to 1st and compacts paid $500 for 1st. The lawnmower class paid $150 for 1st and paid the other top two positions.

I had taken pics for the past two years in the grandstands for the show. For this year, I was invited by the promoters Tyler Tarr and Louie Goss to snap pics. I got in for free to the show to snap off photos of the cars/trucks in the inspection lane and a spot in the announcers stand during the derby. Kurt Becker, who announces NASCAR races on the Motor Racing Network for NASCAR on radio, has called horse races across the midwest, and is the voice guy at Barret Jackson Auction in Arizona, was also in the announcers stand on his night off. I first met him two years ago at the demo derby held at Greenup, IL for the Cumberland County Fair. Kurt often calls county fair horse races near his hometown Effingham, IL and Greenup is one of them.

The rules at this derby is full out weld weld weld! All frame seams can be welded up solid and any car can have leaf springs under the rear end. Any car bumper can be used as well as the drive train of your choice. New style cars can be tilted as well. Tilting is when the tabs are cut off the crush boxes on the frame section. The front frame section is then jacked up and the crush boxes are welded up. This can increase the front bumper height anywhere from 6" or more depending how how the front is raised when welded.

In all, 19 full size cars, 11 trucks, 7 compacts and about a dozen mowers competed. Considering most places this year are lucky to get 10 full size cars, it was a pretty decent turnout though not as high as I'd figure in the full size class for a $2,000 to win show.

Pre derby inspection lane: All drivers had to have their cars inspected before getting a stick to compete. They were checked to make sure they didn't have any illegal steel reinforcements or stuff frames. A frame scope was used to make sure of this. Tyler, Louie and Chad Cline were the main inspectors for the show. Chad made the 70+ mile trip to inspect from up north. He's also the head inspector and flag man way up at Cayuga, Indiana. Tyler and Louie, both former/current drivers, have ran this show for 3 years with full weld rules. Before that, Newton was an all out load fest with many cars having stuff frames full of concrete and steel.

Suicide door Lincoln Continental driven by Austin Knorr. He drove over 3.5 hours from up I-57 to drive this show. He's known for building among the strongest 60s Lincolns.

Jeff Judy in the AMC Concord went head to head with Ray Miller in the #89 Spirit. It smashed the radiator in the Spirit and never refired. The black Concord would take the W in the compacts.

Austin Knorr took 1st place in the suicide Lincoln. He's standing the center. 2nd place was won by the kid in the orange Newton T-Shirt in an 80s box Ford and Jordan Marcus took 3rd in the Plymouth Fury.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
More than half the cars in the compact class were AMCs! :surprise: Wow, more than 20 years after the company went out of business their cars are still the toughest things on the road! Hmn, and Hot Wheels makes the Fairmont and Matchbox has the Taurus/Sable wagon... Too bad JL's Eagle isn't out yet and that the Concord will never end up in 1/64.
