Interesting article in my newspaper last week, "Motoring's 'ugly ducklings' gain in value" it lists the top 10 flops in motor car history, now whether you agree withthem is another story, but is kind of neat to see what this lists is:

1.Edsel: 1958-1960 The word Edsel has become synomnymous with failure, 118,000 Edsels were produced over 3 years, Ford needed to sell twice that num,ber to break even on its $400 million investment. ($3 billion in todays $'s)

2. Amphicar, built in Germany and sold between 1961 & 1968 only 3,878 of these were built. They were neither a great car or a great boat.

3. BMW Isetta built between 1955 & 1962, sold quite well in Europe, but a failure in the USA. The Isetta was an effecient little car to be used in teh big cities in America during the 50's, AN isetta could get stuck in the grill of a big car.

4. 1956-57 Continental Mark II costs $10,000, the same price as a Rolls Royce or 2 new Cadillacs, priced too high and sold too few.

5. Delorean DMC12 built between 1981 & 1982, The car had a lot going for it but the greed of the upper level executives, corporate mismanagement and poorpublic awareness can beblamed for its dismal sales, only 9,000 were ever constructed.

6. 1958 Fiat Jolly based on either a Fiat 500 or 600, both very successful economy cars, the Jolly was a Ghia conversion. It featured Wicker seats and an optional fringe top. It was originally intended for yacht owners who wanted a small car to stow on teh deck.

7. DeTomaso Pantera made form 1971 to 1975 These rear engine sport's cars were sold thru Lincoln Mercury dealers, cars were poorly built and riddled with many mechanical problems.

8. 1961-1962 Studebaker Avanti: was well received by the public despite its controversial styling, but was launched just as Studebaker was about to go down the drain. Only4,643 Avanti's were made.

9. 1948 Tucker: Only 51 of these were built, 47 of them are still known to exist and a recent restored example fetched in excess of a million $ at auction.

10. 1972-1975 VW Thing, a dusted off WWII German command car, problem being most VW owner's were sensible people and the Thing was not a sensible car. The Thing is now a cult classic.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Interesting list- not a single AMC in sight, a very rare thing on these often biased lists!
