So I was driving home this afternoon from Road Atlanta on I-85, riding beside a truck on the left, when suddenly something hit my car. Something big and something going much slower than 70mph. I think that a retread came off the trailer or was thrown up in the air as the trailer ran over it, but as you can see, whatever it was did a lot of damage for rubber. Also, there's no rubber marks anywhere that I saw. Either way, I'm ok and the car's at a shop in Spartanburg SC near where the incident happened and about an hour from where I live. My insurance will cover it. When my mom picked me up we drove back by where it happened and all's I saw was retread; anyone think a piece of rubber could do this much damage?

Now that I've thought about it for a while and shown some other car guys, there's a decent chance that the car is totalled. A-pillars are generally very difficult to repair, and there is extensive damage here. I sure hope not, but it's not looking good...

My first impression was totaled also, but wow! Seriously glad to see you made it through that! Are you okay?

Bear in mind the momentum behind a retread coming off a truck moving at 70ish MPH gives it more of a whallop. A quick Google found a similar story:

Good luck- I know how much you love your car and I hope it can be fixed as good as new!

Damn! That's some damage!

I just paid $200 for a new windshield for my Chevy Avalanche.
A rock or something small got kicked up and hit just under
the windshield wiper. It caused a 13" crack that was slowly
getting bigger...

Well, the estimate is $1600, so no way it's gonna be totaled unless he's wrong and there's damage to the unibody underneath.

Glad you were not hurt! Cars can be replaced....... People can't!

1600$ seems a good price, hope they do do good work.....and your back behind the wheel again soon

Wow! Thank goodness You're okay. I wouldn't think that a tire tread could rip metal. And no rubber marks anywhere makes me wonder what else was flying around the freeway?

Man... something smacked you good! I doubt rubber would do that. Was it a boxed or flatbed trailer? These days when everyone drives with a cell phone I'm thinking someone behind you would have reported it. Did you get with the highway patrol and the local police?

No police involved. I didn't remember anything well enough to give the police a solid report.

I am interested in seeing if they were able to get it water tight around the door frame.
