Today's car of the day is Maisto's 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

Wikipedia

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac, also known just as the Ford Sport Trac, is a mid-size sport utility vehicle with a pickup truck bed sold mostly in North America. The Sport Trac is based on the Ford Explorer SUV and has been built by the Ford Motor Company since 2000. This pickup truck falls between the Ford Ranger and Ford F-Series in size, capability, and price. It competes with crew-cab mid-size pickups and crossovers, such as the Honda Ridgeline, and is a smaller competitor to the Chevrolet Avalanche. During the first year it sold in the US, the waiting list grew to over 3 months. It was also the first body-on-frame sport utility truck.

I sometimes wonder why I have the cars I have from my childhood. This orange Sport Trac never went very far, but was often the truck that drove around my parent's bed with the one way fibers, giving the bed the farmland look.

Wikipedia

The Explorer Sport Trac was introduced in 2000 as a 2001 model. It was built on a lengthened Explorer chassis, but with a small pickup bed behind the four normal SUV doors. To make up for the short box, a bed extender was available. The bed was made entirely of a plastic composite material, and a hard plastic tonneau cover was a common factory option. The tailgate was carried over from the F-150 Flare Side. The pickup had a more rugged-appearing front end, which the 2-door Explorer Sport also received. Midway through the 2001 model year, the engine design was changed. The "Job 1" 4.0L SOHC featured an alloy intake manifold. This was changed to a composite manifold in June 2000, and the oil filler cap moved from the driver side to the passenger side of the engine. For the 2003 model year, the "Explorer" badging was removed from the doors, and the "Sport Trac" badge on the tailgate was changed from red and white plastic to chrome along with an added notation of XLS or XLT trim level, and the B-pillars were now color keyed instead of black. For the 2004 model year, the bumpers and side skirts were changed to a darker grey color, and the option for factory color matched painted bumpers was added, as well as a new instrument cluster with digital odometer. The rugged look carried to the interior, where the only floor option was a full rubber covering. Carpet was not available, however berber carpet floor mats were standard. Instead of the usual sliding rear window found on most pickups, the Sport Trac had a power "Breezeway" window. The 4.0 L Cologne V6 producing 210 hp (157 kW) was the only engine option. This generation Sport Trac remained in production through June 2005, when the final 2005 model year vehicle rolled off the line.

And this was one of the times Maisto did a better job than Matchbox. MB really fu-barred the proportions (namely the front end and solid rear quarter windows) of their Sport Trac. The clear windows / interior / opening tailgate with bed-extender were all fantastic credits for the MB, but Maisto got the vehicle proportions WAY more accurate.

Maisto also released this truck in white and dark blue, as well as several with graphics, including a yellow "Lifeguard" issue, and a creamy green US Forest Service issue.

I overlooked a lot of the Matchbox's problems for this very feature. And then they dropped it because it was too much money. :duh:

If Matchbox did the Sport Trac today, it would be a much different story.

If both were the exact same scale, I guess you can do a hybrid Maisto with clear glazing and an interior. If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

If you misplaced this one, you certainly would have no problem finding it again, Wow thats some bright orange.

I agree on the accuarcy, Maisto can get somethings right, wish their 4$ line would get off the ground..... you know the clear glazing, interiors, rubber tires, but they seem hung up on a certain few castings that have been issued to death.

I need to find that casting. Did they ever make it in blue? My wife drives a 2003 Ford Explorer Sports Track and hers is blue.

I only recall seeing orange Maistos. The Matchbox came in red and a few other colors but they're escaping me at the moment.

I checked my case, and confirmed the ones listed above, including the dark blue one (a midnight blue color). I'll try and get pictures taken soon. There was also a teal color, with blingy wheels (as well as the orange also with blingy wheels).

The Matchbox Sport Trac was available in a medium blue:

Is the blue Matchbox from a regular release, or one of the 100 Years Of Ford sets?

The blue MBX was a regular 1-75/100 release if I remember correctly.

I'm confident the blue MB came from a 5-pack.

I finally got some time to take pictures of my Maisto Explorer Sport Trac variations.

The stock versions were released in realistic Ford colors, which I have identified.

Deep Wedgewood Blue (2001 color) / True Blue (2002 onward)

I think the only one I ever saw was the orange one. I love the pair of blues, beach patrol, and the forest service example. I will be on the lookout for them!

The bling-bling wheels are a detrement...it looks much better without them.
