Here's a great and flawed piece of diecast history. I love the color, the car, the simplicity of the Michigan State Police tampo on the door...

But what of that big ol' crooked light on top...and the bent headlight!

Reasons? You might be thinking quality control issues, but you'd be dead wrong, mister! I've also heard a lot of people complain about the oversized lights on some of the vintage police cars, but some of them really did have huge lights in those days. Why is it crooked, you may ask, and why is the headlight bent? Well, if this car could talk, it might speak of seeing a little action in its day.

It might tell you how a tractor trailor pulled out in front of it during a high speed chase, how it came to a screaching halt, merely knocking the light on top askew and saving the officers inside from certain death.

You may also learn how a baseball bat in a gang riot dented the headlight on the driver's side--a badge of honor it has worn since that day. And yet this car has endured this and many other challenges, living to see a home in the Dragnet police museum many years later. Those are the facts, mister, just the facts!

Support your local demo derby.

It's a nice piece for the time it was released. Check out the divider inside the passenger compartment. That was a cool touch that far as I'm aware, RC was the only company to do that.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
They had those dividers in all of their police cars. A pity the line was almost entirely made from coupes- I can't imagine it would be easy to stuff a prisoner in the back of a coupe with a cage in it!

Yup, divider in all the old RC police cars I have, plus on in an animal control van as well. Nice little touches!

The divider in a two door police car issue was covered extensively in snarky, hilarious debates on the MCCH ten years ago, namely by yours truly, the Administor himself, and other various notables who, for reasons of their own, moved on to other venues. This was, in the flesh, the living embodiment of the ethnic jokes that predominated thirty years ago and have gone out of fashion, that highlighted the crushing stupidity of whichever ethnic group was being slighted. How the he#l do you get your arrestee in there? Why not make a FOUR DOOR police car instead, if you want to exhibit such a detailing triumph as including a rear cage?

Oh boy.

Outside of RC using two door cars for the police series - overall they were a nicely detailed series - the little divider was a nice touch and added to the authenic look of the models. It is to bad many of the small details - chrome sirens, mirrors, etc. were so fragile and tened to break off easily. Still it was a series I enjoyed collecting - such a nice, wide variety of police cars and departments represented - all based on actual models (again, outside of being made on two door cars). One of my favorites, of course, was the '58 Edsel for Allen Park, MI Police and the Milwaukee Fire Chief model (was never sure why that one ended up in the police series).
