I'm not sure whether this qualifies as diecast, since it's plastic, although technically, a die must have been used to cast it. There is a diecast connection for me, which is two-fold.

The first connection with my diecast collecting is that it's a police car--which probably goes without saying. The second connection involves a story from my childhood.

When the first Hess trucks were released back near the end of the 60's, my brother and I weren't much more than infants. I was 4 or 5, which means my brother was 2 or 3. We got the first Hess trucks for Christmas that year, and afterward found an interesting use for the working headlights.

We would wake up in the middle of the night, and parking one Hess truck on both sides of us, the headlights became spotlights for night-time diecast adventures. Piling our MBs and HWs in the middle of the lights, we would play for half an hour or so,then putting our cars away, and turning off the lights of our Hess trucks, we placed them back on the shelf next to our beds and would go back to sleep.

And because being up in the middle of the night was something we figured our parents would not approve of, these adventures were of a secret nature. We never mentioned them to a soul until we were much older.

I found this patrol car from 2003 online by accident while looking for JLs Rosco's Patrol car. I have no idea how much they originally sold for, but the price listed was $10, with a current sale price of $6.96. I haven't actually owned any Hess vehicles since I was a kid--although a friend of mine used to collect them for a time. And I must admit I've been having fun playing with the working lights and remembering the adventures they inspired of yesteryear.

AGree with David, an awesome story and a great reason to collect, to bring back those childhood memories that live on with us regardless how big of a kid we are now.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Great story! And that looks like an '80s Ford Crown Victoria!

Sean, It may be styled after the crown vic, but I'm not altogether sure how generic they tried to be with some of the traits.

And yeah, I saw some prices on those original Hess trucks a few years ago, and they were a fortune then.

The scale here is around 1/43ish, BTW.

Cool! I have a couple Hess trucks still in box from around 2000, but they are so huge its hard to display them.
