Today's car of the day is Tomica's 1976 Cadillac Superior Ambulance.

Wikipedia

Superior Coach was once a school bus body and professional car manufacturer, but today it focuses on building hearses and is located in Lima in Allen County, Ohio.

A beautiful casting, I would absolutely love to see this one come back as a Tomica Limited one day! I hope the tooling still exists somewhere!

Wikipedia

In 1969, Superior Coach Company was acquired by an industrial conglomerate and auto parts maker, the Toledo, Ohio-based Sheller-Globe Corporation. The 1977 model year saw a major downsizing in the automobile chassis used for the professional car business. The ambulance sector switched to larger vehicles based upon van, cutaway van chassis, and truck chassis.

Wikipedia

In 1981, the funeral car business of Superior was sold to Tom Earnhart. Later that year, it was merged with the largest competitor, The S&S Coach Company. This formed a new company, S&S/Superior of Ohio, to oversee the further development of the two businesses. Manufacturing operations were consolidated at Superior's plant in Lima, which had been expanded 30 years earlier.

As of 2007, Earnhart's venture continues to operate as a portion of Accubuilt, Inc., using the Superior Coach trade name for its line of funeral cars and specialty vehicles. Accubuilt's 200,000-square-foot (19,000 m2) flagship facility is also the exclusive production plant for the W.P. Chrysler Executive Series 300, a longer wheelbase version of the Chrysler 300.

Accubuilt's Limousine Division also operates a facility in Springfield, Missouri that manufactures limousines with wheelbase extensions of up to 130 inches (330 cm).

This was one of my Holy Grail models. This particular example was found (by bangerkid45) at the Keystone CARnival in April. And it went home with him at the time, though I made it known how badly I wanted the model. Well, by the time of the Hershey show a few weeks ago, Jon had come up with a suitable trade. He cringed at the thought that this mint on card Tomica would be DLMed, but as can be seen by the pics, that has indeed since happened.

The overspray was sort of haphazard, and the scale was somewhat small, but otherwise, it's a standout!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Nice to DLM such a nice car, and my only glitch would be SAK's comment --the overspray which is very noticeable. If you were brave enough to release it from prison, perhaps you could also touch up or rub away some of the overspray.
How is the size compared to MB and HW ambulances?

I can remember when Tomica released this one - couldn't wait to track one down for my collection. Tomica had a number of wonderful castings in their old F-series of models but I think the Cadillac Ambulance was the best! I had always hoped to find some of the variations on the Caddy Ambulance but so far have just the red and white issue. It fits in well with the Caddy ambulances from Matchbox.

I think the scale is in the 1/72-smaller range Ivan. It might be a bit smaller than the HWs Caddy ghostbuster and a bit larger than the MB version. I think Tomica based this on the Caddy Fleetwood casting they had and that Yatming later copied.

It comes in around 1:76ish I think. And Zach's right about them basing it on their Fleetwood casting. As for the overspray, it's not as bad in person, as it in these pictures. Remember, the model appears many times larger in the pictures than it does in real life. And I'm definitely not brave enough to tamper with it- so oversprayed it stays! ;)

Sean, don't be afraid to try rubbing alcohol (Isoprophyl) on a q-tip......it's gentle and will remove only light oversprays and not the base colors. Just a suggestion, but I fully agree with your feelings.
The size sounds good. What a great display all the Caddy ambulances and hearse's would make since they're close to each other in scale!
