Today's car of the day is Playart's 1981 Dodge 024.

Wikipedia

The Dodge Omni 024 was a modified version of the popular Dodge Omni made from 1979 to 1982. Analogous to the VW Scirocco, this car was a lower, sportier version of the Chrysler/Simca Horizon, using the 4-door's floor pan and chassis as a basis.

It used the same chassis and engine options as the Omni but had a fastback and a new front fascia. The base engine was a 1.7 L Volkswagen inline four producing 70 hp (52 kW), with a 2.2 L, 84 hp (63 kW) Chrysler inline four as an option beginning in 1981. For the first year, the wheels were painted in the exterior color, and had a folding back seat. The car's looks promised more performance than the engine could deliver, and the car was not as practical as the Omni. Both the Omni and Horizon prefixes were dropped for 1981, making them the "024" and "TC3", respectively.

There aren't a lot of small scale Dodge Omnis out there in small scale, but there are three examples of the 024. The Hot Wheels has been featured as Car Of The Day previously, and there's a Tootsietoy copy of this casting (minus the opening hatch). This is likely the definitive version of the car in small scale, though the Hot Wheels is nice (and as appropriate for such a small car, is actually small while this Playart is not).

Wikipedia

The 024 did not sell well and was renamed as the Dodge Charger for the 1983 model year. The 024 had a twin called the Plymouth Horizon TC3. (The name "TC3" may have referred to the car being a Touring Coupe with 3 doors.) It, too, was renamed in the 1983 model year: to the Plymouth Turismo.

In its last year, many parts from the 024 and TC3 were recycled into the Dodge Rampage and Plymouth Scamp pickup trucks. This included the chassis, engine and front fascia.

The 024 was also the basis of the 1980 Dodge DeTomaso and Plymouth Turismo TC3. They featured De Tomaso designed trim and wheels, but the standard drivetrain.

This one brings back a lot of memories. In the mid 1990s one of my neighbors had a bright yellow Omni 024. If I ever do a diorama of my neighborhood, this car goes in that driveway.

Wow, Sean, would I love to do a diorama of my old neighborhood! That would be incredible!

I'd love to have this car, by the way.

Sean, you're a genius!

Right now, I'm mulling over recreating the blocks that I grew up on. I now have to do the logistics for seventeen split-level duplexes, in something resembling a proper scale. I would use the center table for this.

And...I still want this car! :D :toy:

I have been after different colors of this car for years now. My occasional searches online and 'here and there' have only netted me one brown version. These sure don't seem to come up for sale very often.

I've had the idea of doing my neighborhood (residential houses, probably about twenty if I just do my street) for years. I'd love to do my old neighborhood in NJ, but the houses have changes so much since I was a kid- my own old home is barely recognizable now and I don't have picture references to go by. :(

Good luck with your project- might I recommend scratchbuilding from styrene?

I was thinking of doing it in wood. I don't know the first thing about styrene.

It's really doable-all these duplexes are pretty much cookie-cutter. Even better-I'd give it the look it had back in the early '70s when I was there- all the duplexes were in their natural wood finish. Today, in 2010, many of them have been painted in different colors.

I want this Dodge in BROWN! Nine out of ten of them were in brown metallic, anyway!

I have the Playart Omni in brown - didn't give the car much thought - just another Dodge in my collection until my son happily came home one day with his first car - a red Omni. Not in the greatest shape (then again his dad's first car was one that said "it runs" on the windshield). :o With his first car being a little Omni, I had to move them to one of the top shelves in my display room. Also have one of the Hot Wheels versions. I think they are safe as he ditched the Omni long ago and not all that interested in little cars.

So would I, James.

I mentioned to my wife that I'd like to do this, and told her, I'd find a little bit of time each day to paint a house, after the baby's past the critical stage, and she laughed. Long, and loud.

Either way, whatever happens, the project starts next year.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
The car is a much better step away from the "hatch-boxes" of that period. The shovel nose, the raked rear hatch and the b-pillar area all make the car look sportier, but not exactly prettier.
To have named a version of this car a "Charger" shows how desperate Chrysler was...

SAK--wood is traditional for structure making but sheet styrene plastic is MUCH easier and faster and favored by most railroad and diorama makers. It's also easier to paint and look more scale.

The '79 government bailout was a pretty big clue too! ;)
