Today's car of the day is Motor Max's 2004 Chrysler Crossfire.

Wikipedia

The Chrysler Crossfire is a rear-wheel drive sports car marketed by Chrysler as both coupé and roadster and was built for Chrysler by Karmann of Germany.

While poor selling, I always liked the design of the Crossfire. Not too many replicas of the Crossfire out there- Racing Champions did one, and Norev did a very nice version. This one is the least detailed casting, and was recieved as an RAOK from NoirGuru.

Wikipedia

The two-seater arrived in 2001 as a concept car designed by Eric Stoddard with further refinement by Andrew Dyson before beginning production in 2003.

The Crossfire's fastback roof and broad rear fenders made for a rear end design that prompted automotive journalists to describe the new car's resemblance to American Motor's 1965-1967 Marlin. For example, Rob Rothwell wrote ...when I first espied the rear lines of the Chrysler Crossfire I was instantly transported back to 1965 and my favorite car of that year, the Rambler Marlin. Motor Trend" also noted the "provocative boattail theme" of the 2004 Crossfire's sheetmetal to that of the AMC Marlin's.

The name Crossfire refers to the two character lines that run from front to rear along the body sides — crossing each other midway through the door panel. Conceived during the period of Chrysler's ownership by Daimler-Benz, the name also refers to the collaboration of the two companies.

I always thought the Crossfire was under appreciated too. I had a 65 Marlin, really neat old car. Crossfire just wasn't quite my cuppatea though, given the SSR was out about the same time, the retro Mustang was about to be unveiled and even then there were murmurs of a retro Camaro and Challenger in the pipeline. Coming on the heels of the Viper and Prowler didn't really help, those were pretty good sized shoes to try to fill. I don't think the Crossfire's niche was ever clearly defined, at least not for the buying public. Pretty, and I hear they were reasonably spunky...I guess they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I seem to vaguely recall a Maisto / Speed Wheels version, seems it might have been one of those two for a buck deals at Walgreens on the sawed off red blister cards...entirely possible I'm mistaken but I seem to recall one buried in all of the ones I bought some years ago...

I often wondered if it was DBAG's take on an Audi TT that never saw the light of day with Mercedes badges, and it was given to Chrysler. Either way, that's true, its mission was very much undefined, and it was such an Unchrysler that, for the most part it was ignored. Dave Weber, who works for Manheim, claims that rear visibility in the coupe is virtually non-existent, and dangerous.

The Motor Max version that I have's in black, with painted chrome trim.

Not too many replicas of the Crossfire out there- Racing Champions did the concept, and Norev did a very nice version of the production car.
Swifty, I know we've had this conversation before!! :beatit:

Although the Racing Champions casting of the Crossfire was released congruent with a wide array of Dodge and Jeep concept vehicles, the Crossfire was in fact the production version. The RC was even used as a car show marketing tool for the car, when new, and was released in four exclusive colors (which I recently was able to obtain for reasonably cheap).

Here is the Crossfire Concept car:

And the Racing Champions casting (this dated picture is of the general release; the special issues came in white, black, burgundy, and gray)

I stand corrected again. I think what keeps throwing me off is it was in the "Concept & Muscle" series. Since it's far from a muscle car, and it came out well before the real car was in showrooms, I keep thinking it's somehow not the production version. It's obviously not the concept shown in your pics, but was there perhaps a transitional concept that showed what the real car was going to look like?

Well, I can't find anything online about any additional concepts. However, even if this was a 'pre-production' sample to show off what the production car would look like, with all the same design details, wouldn't it still be a model of the production car?

Yes, I'd have to agree so. I stand 100% corrected and will edit the original post accordingly!

I saw one of these once in teh 1:1 version, it passed me on the way to the mall on day in Halifax... When I got there it got the better of the parking places, it was a lot closer to the doors then what I got, but I got to look it over well as I was heading to the door. Nice car, unique design, not your run of the mill North American issue, will it sell well I thought, not a chance in heaven. Just another Prowler or Viper, car for the rich and famous..

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I believe the version found years ago in Walgreen's is the Motormax, not a Maisto. (Some of those cars at Walgreen's used to be Motomax castings) I believe I got one long ago along with some at TRU, and they are all Motormax. Whech, BTW for the price, is just begging to be customized and detailed.
The actual car itself is becoming somewhat of a cult car among enthusiasts, and for whatever reason, I see them here all the time. There have been days where I have seen 2 or 3 different cars driving around near where I work. One of our former employees had one. Scarce , but not even rare here. Go figure.

Not rare around here either- one of my co-workers has one and I see one or two others around town. But my area is still a mostly American mix of cars, especially heavy on Ford & Mercury models. With the amount of Mercury models I see around here, you'd never believe that Mercury is extinct! The rest is mostly comprised of Toyotas and Hondas, with the rest of the foreign manufacturers really being also-rans.

Pontiac was big around here also. Heck, AMC Eagle wagons were common here until about four or five years ago.

The Chrysler dealer down the block from VW couldn't give the durn things away. They had plenty of 'em in inventory.

Right after I posted this morning and went to work, I stopped at my usual yuppie bagel and coffee place and lo and behold was a convertible silver Crossfire with new registration paper on the windshield. Didn't have the memory card in the camera to do a proper photo, and FORGOT my phone takes photos!! I;ll shoot y'all a Crosfire pic when I see one, along with the Mercury Marauders that pop up now and then. What a town Las Vegas is......

The Racing Champoins version looks much nicer than the Motormax. I have the Motormax and it's way too bulky.

As for the real car, they were sold over here. I don't think many cared for the styling let alone the build quality, so even it's Mercedes crudentials couldn't save it.

I have some different colors for the Crossfire other than silver: red and blue.

Nice colors! Silver seems to be the default color for this car. And I saw a dark gray one out on the road today!
