The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

Today's car of the day is Zylmex's 1988 Mitsubishi (Plymouth) X2S concept.

Wikipedia

The Plymouth X2S is the concept vehicle for the original Diamond Star Motors triplet vehicles, the Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser and Mitsubishi Eclipse. It is nearly identical to the 1st generation DSMs, except for a dual exhaust which exits out the rear bumper, and more aggressive-looking body panels. A concept convertible X2S was produced along with the coupe, but only the coupe made it into production. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder was later added to the line-up in 1996.

An obscure choice for Zylmex, and sadly, one of only two first generation DSMs available in small scale (the other being an Ert Speed Strips).

Wikipedia

Few, if any real photos of the Plymouth X2S are known to exist. The only known photos are from the April 1988 issue of Road & Track Magazine.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Quite awhile back, I posted this casting as a question----what did I find at a yard sale? Our all knowing leader, Swifty, posted asap that it was an Eclipse concept. This CotD makes the subject more interesting than ever.

If nothing else, castings of odd concepts and then collecting them can be a very interesting sub-hobby in the diecast world.
The only place I can think of finding a real Plymouth X2S is in a junkyard in Peoria, AZ., or a small junkyard in Phoenix between one of the airport's runways and a Waffle House. I believe these junkyards belong to David.

LOL...cute.

In some weird Honda Del Sol way I kinda like it. It's not like I'm about to fall all over myself to try to find one...but if I did I would probably pick it up just for the novelty.

I recognized this as an Eclipse convertible concept from a young age. The detailed history is most interesting. Early versions of this casting, before licensing was an issue, had a darker, metallic paint and silver Mitsubishi logos tampo printed between the headlights and on the sides by where the b-pillar would be.
