Alfa-Romeo was originally founded in Milan by Cav Ugo Stella who called his company the Lombardy Motor Manufacturing Company. The letters ALFA represent Anomia Lombardo Fabbrica Automobili. Originally, this firm had manufactured small cars for the French Darracq fir. This venture began in 1906. But after having begun their own car production, and experiencing financial difficulties, Alfa was taken over by the Italian Government in 1933 . Ford Motor Company made an unsuccessful attempt to take control in 1986. And Alfa - Romeo subsequently became part if the FIAT Conglomerate.

A receent model in small scale was made by Minichamps64 , among others.
