Tomica vs MB - Mitsu Evo X British Police

Here we have both the Matchbox and the Tomica Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X in British Police livery.

The Tomica is listed as 1/61, the MB as 1/62. So in terms of scale, there is really no large difference. But somehow, the Tomica manages to look “chunkier” - the MB a little more dainty.

But let's start at the front:

And the real thing:

The Tomica on the left impresses at first glance with more detailed tampos on the front and finer lines on the air intake. The reversed Police tampos are nice and true to the original, the fog lights are highlighted as is the Mitsubishi logo and there are black tampos on the two small air vents. But the MB features side mirrors and windshield wipers cast into the screen – both details are (as always) missing on the Tomica. But the Tomica has a cast into the windshield rear mirror.

Let's move to the side :

First impressions, both models have accurate side tampos. If the Tomica or the MB captures the lines of the original better I'll let you decide – I have no complaints either way. But there are a few marked differences on how these models have been executed. The Tomica features solid, tampoed B and C pillars, on the MB these are merely casting lines in the window insert. However, the triangular small window on the Tomica is cast in solid and then blacked out, which shows up quite clearly on the picture. The wheels on the MB look close to the real things – but the ones on the Tomica are their standard “Racing car” wheels and look to small here and somehow wrong. (Trouble is, without breaking their long standing tradition, Tomica have no other wheels to fit for a standard range car)

Then there is the light bar – the Tomica has the right colour – but looks too big compared to the real thing. The MB is much more in scale – but is produced in clear plastic which just doesn't seem right on a Police car.

On to the back – and the story is similar to the front:

The Tomica features the correct tampos there as well – and the tail lights are there too. The rear is better detailed too. But the Tomica omits the Mitsubishi badge while the MB has it, though it seems a bit too large.

The top view reveals more tampos on the Tomica in the shape of the roof rails which add nicely to the more detailed look. But the MB once again has a little detail that the Tomica lacks – the rood antenna stump.

So – neither of them are without its flaws. The Tomica has the crisper casting and correct tampos all around but lacks an authentic look in terms of the tires and such details as the side mirrors. The MB suffers from a lack of front and rear tampos, but makes up for it with much sharper and better looking wheels. Also it must be noted that the Tomica's interior is lacking in detail, the MB looks for better there. This is especially notable as the Tomica's front doors open.

So I guess it is a matter of “you get what you pay for”. But – how much would a few extra tampos really add to the cost of an MB? And would Tomicas bottom line really suffer terribly if they added a more modern looking tire to the base model line up?

But both are nice models and an interesting additions – and show the strengths and weaknesses of both brands.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Excellent review! I'll pick up both when I find them. Who knows, maybe this will be among the first new Tomicas exported in their new range? We can hope!

Great comparison.. Posted Image

The way you detailed the pros and cons seemed fairly unbiased
leaving it up to the reader to decide...

It would be a tough choice, wishing there was a way to merge the
best of both cars together..

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
This is the first time I've gotten to see both castings in closeups and I like 'em both---I love all cop cars, anyway.
