This firm went into business producing car bodies of imported Morris cars in the 1920s.General Motors took over ownership in the 1930s , where both US and British GM cars were assembled for the Australian market. The Holden , following WWII was conceived as "Australia's own car". It was developed from a compact Buick prototype. Original designs copied the Chevrolet. But in the 1970s, Holden used design concepts from the British Vauxhall and German Opel products. Holdens were first exported to New Zealand in 1954. Now, they are being shipped to other countries throughout the world including the US where past products served as the Pontiac GTO and G8 models. The best and most prolific producer of Holden models is Biante in Australia. |

Thanx for the pix Patrick . I had a feeling you'd come through for me! I have the FJ - but never saw the 48-215 (FX) before. I thought the FJ was the first Holden. Is the FX a prototype or preproduction car from 48? |

Ah - thanks for the Torana Sean. There are more, but this'll do for now. Dave, the FX was the regular production model from 48-53 - then the FJ came in. A bit more here: http://swiftysgarage.net/topic/6754770/1/#new Edited by diecastdingo, Jan 4 2011, 11:45 PM.

Thanks Patrick for the info on the early cars. This brings up another question. I note you refer to AUTOart/ Biante. I had heard that Aa was producing Biante models. Are they doing all of them now? And did Aa always produce the Biantes or is this a more recent development? Just Curious! The compaarison to the FX and later FJ is interesting. I was not aware of the FX being the earlier model and always thought that the FJ was the kfirst Holden from 1948. We DO learn something new almost every day no matter how old we get! |

Re AA v Biante, AA used to make all of the casting. As far as I know, they still do. Why these old Holdens are billed as "AutoArt distributed by Biante, I m not sure either to be honest. On the Biante website, the FX and FJs are billed as Biantes, the retail models are all packaged as AutoArts. Bit of a mystery. |

Matchbox labeled the packages of the Holden Ute, "El Camino" to broaden their appeal in the North American market. Dean |

Anyone who likes the former El Caminos will love the new MB UTE ! However, finding it here , to date has been a real letdown ! Rumor is that the release of this model and a few others was made first to Australia and Canada to alleviate previous complaints from those collectors who claimed the US always got the product first! I wonder if this might be true? |

I can honestly say, I refuse to confirm or deny that rumour. But that Holden UTE is my nomination for 2011 casting of the year..... and I have to step outside and check to see if there are 2 moons in the sky tonite and hope I don't get dumped on the flying pigs Edited by James, Jan 6 2011, 08:57 PM.

Well, some people have found the Holden Ute in Australia - not me though. Still looking. One clown on another board photographed his stash of more than 40 Holden utes - all supposedly found at his local TRU. Yeah, right, sure... Thanks buddy. |

I agree Patrick! That kind of behavior should not be allowed and I hope he was chastized on that board. Although, he probably was not. As I recall, a guy on a board Sean used to visit , bragged about all the forklifts he was able to buy! What someone will do with 45 of the same car is beyond me. I consider this action as outright hoarding! But with only 2 or 3 pieces in a new case, I wonder how he ended up with 45 ? You watch, a year from now, he will probably return most to the store since by that time they will no longer be in short supply. This hoarding / scalping activity only started wth MB cars after Mattel did away with allowing random orders of new product. I said to myself after Mattel took over MB that scalping would then occur ; it did and continues to occur. Enough said. I could go on but why bother? |

I would pickup 2 or 3, and if I went back for more it would be because I could trade them here for some really neat Chevy's. So far I have only seen 2 UTE's and I bought both, one is heading south soon, 45 is a tad too many, IMHO, |
