Henry Austin, the founder had previously served as General manager of Wolseley. In 1922, Austin introduced the Austin Seven. It was the smallest 4 cylinder car in production in Great britain at the time. This car was reportedly also manufactured
by license in France, Germany, Japan and the US ( American Austin by American Bantam) . A larger "8" replacement model appeared in 1939. In 1952 the Austin and Morris firms merged to form British Motors Corp. Both marquees then introduced their separate renditions of the Mini .In addition Austin produced most if not all the London Cabs during this era. In 1953, Austin also manufactured the Metropolitan for Nash and subsequently for AMC beginning in 1953 for introduction the following year. In 1968 BMC became part of BLMC for a short while. The next owner was BMW n Germany. But BMW subsequently divested of all the remaining brand names except for MINI which had grown into becoming a separate marquee. No Austins are in present production, but the name is owned by the MG Rover Group.

Models have been made by a sbstantial number of companies in small scale diecast . A prominent example is by Matchbox.
