Ah, the early days of NASCAR diecast from Racing Champions - back when one could still have the actual sponsors on the car from Miller and others. The cars look kind of crude by today's standards for diecast but when they came out - most collectors couldn't wait for the next set of models and drivers to be issued.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
I was 9 when these came out and I couldn't wait for the next ones to come out either! Albeit I was a big NASCAR fan as a kid through my early 20s. Still, I can assure you that all of my early Racing Champions saw track duty (including the rare Rob Moroso #20 that I got at Pocono Raceway in 1991) and a great many races on the carpeting over the years. In later years I even ran a points championship. I don't see why the points system had to change- it made perfect sense to me as a kid! You can't tell me today's supposedly more educated fans are dumber than I was when i was ten.

I agree 100% that they were crude, as were other Nascar diecast of the day, which led to competition among Matchbox Ertl Revell and later Action RCCA etc to see who could produce the better product. In the end Racing Champions' issues were on the same level as the others. Early Racing Champions lack of quality control and Nascars ever changing scenerios and licenses made for many interesting variations for collectors who were fine tuned at spotting them.

Hard to believe the 1st releases of Racing Champions Flat Bottoms are now 22 years old!...seems like just yesterday.
