While digging through my toy room and cleaning stuff up, I stumbled across casting #823, the '91 Chevy Caprice. Originally I posted pics of the Crown Vic some time ago in this thread - http://swiftysgarage.net/topic/385896/1/#new . . . With both the Caprice and Vic in my vision, thought it's time to see what Yatming really did to the Caprice casting to turn it into a Crown Victoria. Looking at them from just a distance, they appear to be identical castings . . . or so we think. The Ford is on the left and the Chevy is on the right in all pics unless noted. ![]() At first glance, it appears all Yatming did was just change the grill and the retool the taillights from the Caprice casting over to a Ford Crown Vic. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Different sized bases . . . The ford is just a bit longer. Also notice the Vic uses wider wheels too. ![]() From the firewalls forward, these are two different castings for sure. The A-Pillars are what have me thinking these are actually two unique castings. The A-Pillars don't appear to be identical. The front door lines on the Caprice go straight up towards the A-Pillar where as the door lines on the Vic go at a slight angle. The trunks appear different as well. All the fender appear to be unique and correct to each cars. Both possess correct appearing hoods for each one respectively. The Ford has a Ford front bumper and the Caprice bumpers are correct for the Caprice as well. Both models share identical dual front seats which makes this all even stranger to comprehend. I had previously thought and agreed with Swifty that the Vic was just retooled from the Caprice. Now, I'm not so sure. Anyone have help for a troubled Yatming collector?

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

Thanks for the comparison between the two! The difference in the bases is to be expected, considering the front bumpers were changed from the Caprice to the Crown Vic. The differences in the body are surprising, and one has to wonder why Yat Ming went to the effort of creating a unique casting for the Crown Vic if they were going to make it look just like the Caprice from the side profile! |
