Asda UK jumping ahead with 5-packs

Yes, that's right. I popped to my local Asda today to see if they had put anything new out, only to discover all this....
Posted Image
We were up the #8 VW Classics 5-pack, but have now jumped to the head of the queue with #9 Fire, #10 Construction and #7 Camping Adventure. For those interested, the package date is 1431A1, and the models are base coded D21. The eagle eyed may have noticed the ROW packaging for 5-packs (yes there are 2 package types, with domestic/US (also Australia) featuring only English writing and the pack name on the front, with international/ROW featuring multi-language writing and "5-pack/set/coffret" where the pack name would be). This pack contains a huge disclaimer at the top of the window on the Construction pack.
Posted Image
And now it seems that we have filled in one of the gaps in the number system, as the Camping Adventure pack is....
Posted Image
Pack #7. This only leaves #3 and #6 still missing from the year (as well as obviously #11 and #12).

So let's do a few closer shots of the models, as these things lasted just long enough in the pack for me to take a photo.

We start with the Fire pack.
Posted Image
This includes the Ford Crown Vic as a Fire Chief and sporting the newer style light flat bar on the roof.
Posted Image
The International Workstar Brush Fire Truck (boy that's a long name) in white with a Forestry Fire Rescue livery. Very simple and effective this one.
Posted Image
The 2006 Fire Engine with some nice little detail touches on the side (although sadly not behind the rear wheel).
Posted Image
The Utility Tanker in a nice red fire scheme (I was hoping we would get one of these on this model).
Posted Image
And a lovely Ford E-350 Ambulance featuring the livery of the Providence Rhode Island Fire Department Mobile Intensive Care Unit. If anyone has a photo of the real one, I would love to see it, as I had a look on google and couldn't find a pic.
Posted Image
All I can find is this tiny picture of an officer by the side of one of their vehicles, but most of it is cropped out. It is a really nice Ambulance though, or can we actually call it an Ambulance with this livery?

Next, we have the Construction 5-pack. All 5 models are sporting the same style livery here, featuring a golden crest and "King J Construction".
Posted Image
First up we have the Skidster in orange with a black bucket and matt black tampo.
Posted Image
Next up is the Quarry King in white..
Posted Image
The Dump Truck looks good in matt black with a yellow dump and yellow wheels.
Posted Image
This model also sports a third pass through the tampo machine as the front is printed too. It appears that the wreath around the golden crown on the front is tampo printed on top of the white, as it is glossy black with the bodywork being matt. That enables the detail to be much more crisp.
Posted Image
Next up is the Ground Breaker in green.
Posted Image
Finally we have the Road Roller in a fairly dark red. I actually much prefer this one to the white/blue that appeared in the basic range as it looks really good with the matt black side stripe and white detailing on the side of the roller. I am not a huge fan of construction, but this model is definitely the highlight of the pack for me.

Finally, we come on to the newly released Camping Adventure pack.
Posted Image
I love the little Baja Bandit, and this red one is really cute. I know many are not keen on this model, but I have always been a big fan, and this light orangey-red version is one of the nicest I have seen it in.
Posted Image
For those interested, the top print has "World Camping Tours" in the same style as the VW T2 Bus that comes in this pack with a small grid design around it. It also states is is the WCT vehicle 2, as if it is the companion to the VW T2. That is a really nice touch. I like it.
Posted Image
Then we have a lovely tan Honda Ridgeline. This has a very simple tampo print, with just Ridgeline and 4x4 on the side. It makes this model much more street realistic with no major side design.
Posted Image
Next up we have the next model in our ongoing Parks series. This time it is the Toyota 4Runner. As many have seen before, we have a number of these liveried vehicles, and this will fit in very well with those.
Posted Image
Next up we have the orange VW T2 Bus with World Camping Tours on the side. Matching this with the Baja Bandit helps to promote play between those 2, and I see where the guys at Mattel were going with this one. I also like that this is a similar orange to the classic orange VW Camper that Lesney did in the early 1970s (I shall have to try and do a side by side photo of the 2 at some point).
Posted Image
Finally, we have a trailer unit in a 5-pack. Woohoo! Yes. Something that we have been after for ages has finally arrived. The Travel Trailer returns in the plastic bodied/metal base configuration we have seen before (if anybody wants to know) but now....
Posted Image
The base has been updated. It is still made in Thailand, but now sports a code (L1012) just before the wheels which apparently is a Mattel unit code, and the 1186,MJ,1,NL markings which we know are starting to appear on new stuff. Does this mean all older castings will eventually see these added to them? Only time will tell (or Mattel in an upcoming Ambassador report).
Posted Image
But I am really happy to see a car and trailer in the 5-packs again. This is the highlight of this pack for me. Plus, I see a lot of potential for play in this pack alone. We get a car and caravan, a camper and buggy paired together, and the park ranger vehicle all in one. Although they could have used the Yamaha Rhino as the Park Ranger (ooh now there is an idea for the future....)

So all in all, this was a very good day for me. Asda UK are really doing well at the moment.

Love the pictures - thanks for posting them here! Can't wait to get caught up on 5-packs - they are looking great. I'm still on the fence if I want to spring for the construction set. I only buy select construction equipment, but I do really like the Quarry King in white, and would add the red road roller, since I never bought the white/blue single.

The other packs are for-sure buys. I LOVE that Ridgeline!

We still haven't seen the Police 5 pack with the Dodge Monaco or the 5 pack with the purple Ute here. We're falling further and further behind, but I see two must-buy packs here (VWs & Camping) and one maybe (Fire). While I do collect the Skidster, I don't like it enough to get a whole five pack for just that one model.

I love that little camper trailer. I really want that one! Unfortunatly for me, the other 4 in the pack don't do much for me, with the graphics on them. Has the camper been issued single carded?

If it was ever issued on a single card, it had to have been back in the Hero City days if the castings even existed then. Otherwise to my knowledge it's only been in multi-packs.

That particular trailer has never been in a single pack. It's been in the Hitch 'n' Haul series, and obviously the five pack, but nothing solo.

The VW set is out here in droves - and not selling very well. I was turned off by the colours, they just don't suit the castings IMO. I'm desperately waiting for the Camping set though, it is really rare to get a trailer these days. Why not sell it as a single?

Its the same over here too. There is plenty of the VWs sets but I have not found the camping set. Its the only set I want.

Neither of them are showing up here. I was lucky enough to get the VW set off Eric from the PMCC at the November meeting, but no sign of the camping set here yet.
