Only on summer Saturday nights and holidays here in New Jersey. More often, the task is delegated to collect 'revenue', e.g. checking inspection stickers. In fact, in New Jersey, they ought to just dispense with the term 'police' altogether, and redesignate law enforcement officers as 'Revenue Collectors'. That's pretty much all they do.
