Was looking through the databases and realized we don't have one for Golden Wheels. Not a big deal, but I've got a few to share:![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (listed on bottom as a Ford Galaxy...???...I've never heard of a Ford Galaxy van before) ![]() My camera does not like this ambulance... The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
|
Quick notes- the Pennsylvania State Police car here was completely unlicensed. I have an example (scored at Toy Liquidators circa 2000) and this is one of two unlicensed toy cars (the Racing Champions DARE Mustang being the other) that made the PSP decide not to authorize any diecast replicas at the current time. So this is likely the last Pennsylvania State Police car in this scale for quite some time (it's been over a decade at this point...who knows when we'll see another). Also, Frank's Golden Towing is a complete ripoff of the Frank's Getty tow truck from the 1980s. Odd considering this model came out sometime around the year 2000. Likewise, the other two are ripoffs of Hot Wheels paint schemes. And lastly, the Ford Galaxy is sold in Europe. Realtoy made one too. |

Most annoying: they made a very, very nice Checker Marathon, in 1960s NYPD livery (!). It should've been a taxicab. The tooling was dead on, and the model was very nice, with appropriate heft, but it's totally wrong as a police car. It's like seeing Tom Brady in a Miami Dolphins uniform. |

Well, since we got them out, here's some older pics I have:![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Valvoline cars seem so cheap compared to the others, the wheels do really make a difference, and at the price point I think the later Golden Wheels were actually pretty nice, better than some real riders I've seen. ![]() Not all of these are Golden Wheel, some are MotorMax, but I bought all of them in the same stores in same (or so similar there is nothing to note) packaging, same price, within a couple years of each other...so for a long time I presumed these were all by the same company. I didn't take better pics of the Fed Ex trucks...a different van type and I'm not sure what. There is a matching Fed Ex step van, by the wheels I presume now is MotorMax. I also have a Ferrari (somewhere) in blue with Golden Wheels wheels. Edited by juantoo3, Dec 13 2011, 10:45 AM.

They did use the Checker as a taxi (and fire chief car) - it was issued in a four piece set (similar to the NYPD police set and a fire dept set). I used to have one but as I have been in the process of downsizing - the four piece taxi set was traded off quite a while back. What amazes me about Golden Wheel is the difference in the quality of their castings - from the first two pictured that resemble Matchbox type casting to the others that we tend to associate with the cheaper models from the far east. Anyway - here are the NYPD cars from Golden Wheels ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by pjedsel, Dec 13 2011, 01:01 PM.

George, I have the Checker as a Taxi, it came together in a set with three other castings. I'll put them up here when I get a chance to take photos. |

The Mad Documenter!

Some of these are really quite nice. The wheels on some of them seem to be based on the Matchbox Premier series wheels and tires. I love the Checker! It looks better than the Matchbox issue. I also like the red early 50s Chevrolet. The Tahoe with solid rear side windows seems a little odd. Was it offered like that? (The real one I mean) I've never seen one like that, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist. I see some of the Fed Ex trucks in Wes's post. I have some that I ordered direct from FedEx back in 2005 or 2006 (I forget which year exactly, they arrived with NASCAR promos) that look similar...and have similar wheels and tires. So, are these really from a company called Advantage Industries, which is what is prominently on the chassis, or somebody else? ![]() ![]() ![]()

I do believe Advantage Industries is somehow related to Golden Wheel. In addition to the FedEx vans, there is also a Dodge Ram EcoLab pest control promo truck, which also has a very similar feel and build as Golden Wheel castings, despite the fact that the Express, Econoline, and Ram have never been offered as Golden Wheel models. Hmmmm |

I didn't even know about the Econoline, Ram, and Astro until just now. Going on my want list also! Also, the red car is a 1950 Oldsmobile, but Golden Wheel did do an early '50s Chevy also. As an added bonus it was in the same set as the Checker so it's an outstanding casting. There were four cars (Caprice & Checker have been shown, a circa 1953 Chevrolet and a '30s era car that no one I know has ever been able to identify). |

Just for the accuracy of your guys' wantlists, the FedEx Chevy is a full size Express van, and not an Astro. |

I liked Golden Wheel ever since I first seen them at KB Toy Liquidators maybe 10 years ago. Picked up some while they had them, and then some others when Dollar General carried them for a short while then too, but don't think I'd seen the brand around since. Here's a couple; ![]() ![]() |

Love the pic of the old Times Square on the fire chief cruiser! It looks pretty well detailed as well. If people payed more attention to these brands, some of them might still be around today, eh? |
