I've seen this pic before...I cringed then, I'm cringing now.

Seems I recall this was a display at a Japanese Hot Wheel Convention or Show or something.

Most in there are obviously from the Classics series...but I see a few that are not. The goldish colored chopped Merc in the middle of the pic, for instance, isn't the Purple Passion, and if it was it wasn't released (either time) in quite that color. There's a white car with a black spoiler bottom left that I can't see enough to I.D., not in the Classics lineup...possibly a Japanese only issue. And top left way in the back is a white El Camino looking car that was not in the Classics...no Elkys, and the Ranchero didn't appear until series 5...most of these are series 2 or 3.

I'm not sure what the 500 yen "coupons" are, but last I checked many years ago one yen was about one cent...in other words those are about like $5 tickets for something.

I do wonder what became of all these cars. Probably some bunch of kids were made very happy...for a while anyway.

Looks like there is 3 El Caminos from the 100% line in there. I have to say, that is disturbing to have all those HW Classics just thrown in like that. There are some really nice and hard to finds in that pile.

White car with black spoiler is a Jada Mitsubishi Lancer. The Mercury is a Racing Champions. And there's a black BMW (7-series?) front end visible to the right of the Jada Lancer. What was the gimmick behind this? Was it an artistic display? Or a grab box for kids? Or a guess how many for a chance to get a 500yen coupon? Or identify the non Hot Wheels mixed in? Or???

Are you sure about the Mercury? I thought is was HW from the 100% line, just not the Passion from the Classics.

I read it was an artistic display...for all that's worth. I'm with you, in that it was probably everything you mentioned and possibly more.

And Firehawk is right too...lotsa good stuff just thrown in there willy nilly. Looks purty, like a treasure chest, but you can't help but think of all the damage as they were probably just tossed in.

Nope, I'm not sure. And actually, based on the Hot Wheels coupon thingies, and the other identifiable alternate brands are buried at the bottom, like filler, I would suspect that the Mercury probably is Hot Wheels. I have a similar colored Racing Champions, but thinking about it more, I think the one I'm thinking of has more of a moss tone to it.

If we're talking the copper and tan Merc in the middle. It kind of has the same traits as this casting without the dual spotlights and chrome side trim. The jeweled tail lights look the same, but the tan one loses me at the top door sills. It has door sills, but mine version the sills are less detailed.

Wow, great comments and observations guys! I snapped this pic at a diecast store when i was in tokyo, winter 2009. it was thier display window, and it looked like they just dumped all their classics into it.
i got the impression that 500 yen was the price of the cars, but i can't read japanese, so i don't really know.
