The Lincoln line up really isn't that bad except for that hideous abomination called MKT. But you've pinponted it, people in this day and age cannot see spending thousands more for a Ford with Lincoln grille and a few other ammenities. Buick is another one that was once forgettable, but has made a strong comeback with some rebadges of Opels. Needless to say its the right direction for Buick. Yes, GM owns Opel, but if you can't beat Germans with near luxury Buicks you join them. Regal AKA Opel Insignia, new later this year Encore AKA Opel Mokka, Enclave and LaCrosse and of Cruze-like Verano. I'm seeing younger people in new Buicks every day. Lincoln should have teamed up closer with Jag and Volvo when they owned both. The Jag based Lincoln LS wasn't a overly bad car, it suffered a bit in some areas. I strongly believe Lincoln will be the next to bite the bullet even though a friend of mine who works closely with Ford assures me 'new' stuff is on the way. Will it be a rebadged Ford? Probably... I also heard Ford is going to remove Fiesta from the US market, don't know if that is true or not. And within the next few years Ford Mustang production will be moved to Mexico. |

The Mustang plant was a joint facility with Mazda. Now that Ford's stake in Mazda is diminished Mazda pulled out. So therefore it's not surprising that Ford would be looking at moving the Mustang somewhere else. Sad that it'll be going to Mexico though. It's already a joke how Japanese cars that are built here have more "made in America" content than what is probably the quintessential American car. As for the Fiesta- they've spent a fortune marketing it here and they need it to boost the corporate fuel economy. It would make no sense to remove it from sale in the USA unless sales tank badly. And maybe it's just me but I think most Lincolns do a very good job disguising their Ford origins. And I like their styling at the moment (in particular the waterfall grill that...surprise surprise....is going away soon) but I can see why they'd be unpopular with the general public. Getting rid of Mercury was a mistake- getting rid of Lincoln would be an even bigger one. But Ford thinks they can convince folks that Ford is both a premium make and an economy make. This is going to backfire on them. Lincoln should be moved further upmarket, Mercury should have been given a few mid-price cars and a few sporty offerings (a Cougar!) with cat names. |
