Question for the vets; New releases

I am relatively new to collecting and I was wondering if there is a way to know if a particular car is going to be hard to find. For instance, I want to get the new Porsche Boxster that apparently was recently released. I live in a metropolitan area and we have Walmarts, Targets, TRU, etc. I have not had a problem getting any other new cars. Lil Red Express, Ferrari 458 Spyder, to name a few. Anyway, I haven't seen the Porsche anywhere except OFAS where you can buy it for $7-8 shipped. If I knew it was going to be HTF I might just spend the money. Is there anyway to tell?

Support your local demo derby.

Best bet on new have to have releases is to simply . . . . . . wait. Nothing put out by HWs is truly rare now a days even if at first it's hard to find. Keep that in mind. After the initial wave of hoarders, scalpers and collectors get what they want things end up being easier to find.

Thanks Crafty. I was thinking I would feel pretty silly paying $8 for a .88 cent car. I like it but not that much.

Yeah, we all take a pretty hard look at that silliness.

What Crafty said is probably the best advise unless you know absolutely it will be a short run...sometimes MBX will let known in advance there will be a short run color before changing to another color, for example. But HW doesn't *usually* telegraph their punches like that. The tough part is, those truly rare cars are come and gone before you know it.

And part of collecting is knowing you are not going to get everything the easy way, not every hard to find car will show up where you can find it. But the only way to tell is to wait.

I will usually pay like $2.00 at the local diecast store for the stuff I am having trouble finding. Like was said, the stuff usually shows up eventually but I have had a few instances where I never found the car. This usually happens with the upper HW lines like the Donahue Javelin from the Vintage series. I did get worried for a while when I waited like 3 months before I finally found the MB GT/CS Mustang. I have to admit that most HW do turn up I feel a whole lot better when I get one in my hands

Well, The boxter as far as I know has not hit retail stores yet. It is scheduled to be released in Late June according to Hotwheelscollectors.com.

You can buy it on OFAS. Do some people get cars before they are "released"?

Yes. No idea why, but it happens. Probably people with connections at the factories and/or distribution centers. If they are from Hong Kong, the factory would be a good bet. But it really is hard to tell what will be difficult to find at first. Occasionally HW will release a trendy casting into the First Editions line with a metal base (usually an old VW done up in drag racing form)...those typically end up HTF, but aside from that pretty much everything will become a peg warmer at some point. The only car I haven't been able to find in the store that I wanted in the past 5 years was the white E92 M3.

Went to TRU today and there was about 15 Porsche Boxsters and about as many Ferrari 599xx 's. you were right. Patience is a virtue
