I have been a fan of this car since the first time I cherish my Hot Wheels Dragster, "The Mongoose."

For those into details, something that makes this car interesting to me is the painted green "vinyl" interior. This was an extra cost to RC2 as the basic interior would have been molded black.

Snake was a Barracuda, and in keeping with being sponsored by Plymouth the Mongoose was a Duster.

I didn't notice the green interior until it was pointed out. I liked the car even more now, so it has to go on my want list!

Daniel, thanks for all the work that you put into producing these images for our viewing pleasure.
A job well done!
I like all JL WHITE 1971 Dusters.
This is a favourite JL casting.
I never really cared for the JL Dodge Demon casting.

I can remember when I used to see 1971 Plymouth Dusters and Dodge Demons at the drag strip on a regular basis.
Those were fun times.
I used to love watching the burn-outs.
Oh, the smell of rubber and the the exhaust fumes.
And don't forget the the noise (sounds).

Cheers. Cobra

Mac, wouldn't green plastic cost the same as black, or white, or any other color? I've been told that's the case but it's by people who have worked in the plastic model industry, not diecast, so maybe JL had a different supplier.

This Duster looks good. It would have looked so much better if Warner Brothers had allowed it to be the CK, though! (But I always think that with all Dusters)

Hey Billy Kingsley,

Good question. At the factory where the Duster was made, molded black plastic was the standard material for interiors. They had large quantities of it ready to be melted down and molded into JL interiors and other parts. The only other regularly used "color" was white for the White Lightning cars. When a color other than black was spec'd for a car, in most cases the factory painted that color over the black interior. We had this discussion with the pricing folks at the plant and the cost was less if they did it that way.

One exception to the painted interiors is with the Johnny Retro series. With those cars the idea was to use elements from the early days of Johnny Lightning and even Hot Wheels cars. We had the interiors molded in colors used at the time. And you guys thought we stripped all of the details off to save money! :(

Release 1 Camaro: Light Cream
Release 2 AMX: Metallic Silver-Grey

Posted Image
Release 3 Firebird: Metallic Silver-Gold + one molded black interior (because the silver-gold looked awful with the purple body-paint on the Charger)
Releases 4 & 5: I'm not sure because I wasn't around when they were produced.

Perhaps the plastic color doesn't change the cost too much in the model-kit industry because the entire car is molded of the same colored plastic. With a JL car, the interior was just part of the car. And our quantities became smaller and smaller post 2004.

I hope this helps.

Mac
