My name is Mike and I have been collecting die cast cars since 1966. As you probably guessed it started with Matchbox, was smitten with Red Line era Hot Wheels and a few Toppers. The addiction really took hold in 1994 with the introduction of the PlayingMantis line of Johnny Lightning cars. I consider myself to be a serious collector and believe that collecting is a very personal thing. As you can imagine I have aquired some very tough to come by pieces over time and my JL collection alone is well north of 10,00 pieces. I have for the most part just been a lurker on other sites and other forums, just to see what others are into. I haven't been on line much lately and have to ask, what happened to JL TALK. COM? I see some names that I recognize, so is this what used to be JL TALK?Thanks for reading, I look forward to being a member, learning and sharing information from others who are as addicted as I am. |

Welcome to the Garage, Mike! Swifty's Garage was established in 2006. JL Talk disappeared fairly suddenly, and I still am not sure if there was ever an explanation as to why (I was not a member there, and so don't know many details). When JL Talk disappeared, many members climbed on board here - including Tom Z, making this the official board for Johnny Lightning. As now a member, instead of a lurker, you should be able to see the official "Ask Tom Z" sub-forum. Happy to have you here! Enjoy the stay! |

Welcome to the forums! I too started here as a lurker and decided to register in order to partipate. I don't have a single complaint about it, except my wallet because of all the sales our members have! As for JLTALK, it went down due to hosting budget to my understanding, and with cooperation from Swiftys Garage, our community has become the newly affiliated website to continue the JLTALK portal. (However we are not the original JLTALK.) |

Welcome aboard, MoParMike! Excellent name, BTW! I used to hang out at JLTalk as well as here, Wyatt even stops through here from time to time. I really miss JLTalk, but I find Swiftys a bit broader in scope. I love the JL brand, but I also love many other brands too, and with the help of this site I've been exposed to even more brands and more awesome castings out there in the larger world. There's lots of great folks here, some of them know quite a bit, and many of them used to hang out more or less at JLTalk too. So hopefully you will feel right at home. Jump right in! The water's fine! |

Mike, welcome to the Garage. It's very nice to have you here. I think the domain name expired on JLTalk and it wasn't renewed by the owner Bobby Williams who originally started the site several years ago. Wyatt had stayed on as moderator after Bobby had decreased his collection. Many members here on the Garage were also members on JLTalk. Many came here after the other site went down. Not long after that, the Ask Tom Z section began here on Swiftys and we're 'officially' linked with Johnny Lightning. |

Welcome to the Garage! ![]() Swifty's Garage was actually established a few months before JL Talk in 2006 (we started in July '06, JLTalk started in November '06). Wyatt & Bobby ran a great forum and I considered it my 'home away from home' board. We always had a great working relationship between our forums and a lot of JLTalk members joined the Garage for their non-JL needs. When JLTalk went down for good, many of the members reconnected here, and Tom Z. honored us with the official JL forum designation as well. So while we're not technically a continuation of JLTalk, the spirit of JLTalk lives on here.

Welcome to the garage, Mike! I think you'll find it a very enjoyable place in terms of assisting you with your hobby needs. I think most of the best people from many other boards have gravitated here. It's a very user friendly site that's easily navigated as far as hopping to other forums, and that ease of moving around the boards--along with a vast variety of collectors of all things diecast--have really helped to open me up to many nice brands that have made my collection more interesting. And yes, JL lives, and is sponsored, right here at the garage...so questions can be posted directly to Tom Z.. Reps from other brands have also looked upon the garage kindly as well. I think that's because we state our reasons for liking, or disliking, certain diecast...but don't often go berserk with flaming, though we can become a tad passionate, or vent a little now and then

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
|
Welcome, Mike! Your first posting was a very good one. Nice to know your collecting history. The guys above have said pretty much what we're all about here. What you will see here are more open minded collectors that love diecasts for what they are and not just for value. Be prepared to meet a lot of DLMer's (release their cars from packages), but many of us collect cardboard, too. All brands get a chance here, because many people here are gearheads and love cars. We all have our opinions and usually express them, but mainly in a sharing way and not meant to be harmful to others. Once you get to know people, it's fair game to dig a Ford lover if you're a Chevy guy, or how ugly you think a casting is when others think it has charm. It gets pretty funny here, and there is no flaming or arguing about TH's. etc. It's all about fun and not so much $$$. The best part is how much I have learned about castings AND the prototype subjects that I have never seen anywhere. For everything I see new here, I probably have 5 questions, and eventually someone here will answer them. Have fun, Mike, and show us lots of cars. Edited by ivantt, Sep 6 2012, 12:36 PM.
