2006 Matchbox Garbage Truck. ![]() What a fantastic model. Don't know where to start. It's sooooooo realistic, especially for a generic. In fact, at quick glance, the cab looks nearly like a Scania P90, which is a good thing. The actual Garbage Bed (if that's even what you call it! ) in the back looks fantastic. It's so detailed, and it has nice play value with the mechanical (plastic) crusher in the back. The lights in the back resemble that of a real garbage truck, with the some of the top lights representing flashers and brake lights. Sad to see what it's going to be replaced by, I surely wasn't expecting something looking like this replacing it.![]() Sigh. Feel free to post all of the 2006 Matchbox Garbage Trucks you have. It'll be a good farewell! (Hopefully it'll continue in 5-packs )

The sad part? I absolutely LOVE the paint scheme the new one was given. Definitely one of the few highlights of the 'overtampoed' year. But I won't pick it up because the casting is a serious 'what were they thinking?' one. Why can't they decorate the 2006 casting this way?!? I've never seen a real trash truck in beige/tan before (especially not one urging folks to "Think green"). On a side note, I know we do a Casting Of The Year on the board. Can I nominate the new trash truck to be the exact opposite of that? "Casting No One Asked For But We Got Anyway"? I mean, seriously. A monster trash truck? Trashzilla! In addition to the lift kit, it's even got a snorkel for crying out loud. Why? Why does this exist? Is there some similar vehicle the National Park Service uses to get trash from Yosemite or Yellowstone? I'm grasping at straws here... |

I like the new trash truck casting. I think it looks like a post-apocalyptic or futuristic vehicle. It's perfect for the zombie apocalypse, or what have you. |

Well, everyone's entitled to there own opinion, but I didn't expect to see one like this. I agree with Swifty 100%. And yes, that would be a great idea to do a 'Worst Casting of the Year.' I know that Garbage Grinder would definitely get nominated! Oh, and that "thing" next to the windscreen isn't a snorkel, it's an exhaust like on the Land Rover Defender 110. But, that's no better. A 4x4 Garbage Truck with a bull bar, an Australian exhaust on the wrong side, and huge off-roading wheels. Yup, you guys know what I'm voting as 'Worst Casting of the Year.' |

Well, I imagine some of those remote trash cans in parks ARE hard to get to, and may need some off-roading ability. I mean, they probably gotta go where the bears go to dump in the woods to pick up trash! But, yeah, I'd say that it is a pretty good stretch that this would ever be a "real" garbage truck. Won't be on my list to pick up , fer shur. We may all look back on this year's diecast and laugh in 20 years, as they'll be rare as no one saved or collected them, and be worth $$$ then. LOL. Jerry |

You have a source for the Land Rover "snorkel" being an exhaust? I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. Also, since it's a fictional vehicle, I think the intake and exhaust could be on either side of the motor. |

It's an exhaust, and it's Australian. A 'snorkel' would make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Here's a couple of Australian Macks, both with dual exhaust: ![]() You can read more about it if you're interested. |

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
|
Don't be so hard on the new trash truck. It has good wheels to rip off, and throw away the rest of the casting.

Who at Matchbox has the off road vehicle fetish? Half of the castings that have come out in the past half dozen years have been off road. If you don't like the design of this sand buggy, here's a new one that looks about the same but is a little bit different. And now an off road garbage truck!!? Anybody here man enough to crawl up that ladder and wrestle that massive spare tire off the top and change a tire? Good luck getting the flat back on the roof of the truck. I asked at the gathering what was the purpose of bringing out a new generic garbage truck to replace a generic garbage truck that had replaced a generic garbage truck before. I can't really remember the answer, but it still doesn't make sense to me. |

A snorkel wouldn't make sense on a semi-truck/lorry, but it absolutely would on a Land Rover or anything else designed to go off road. You can see both an exhaust with traditional placement and a snorkel in this picture: ![]() Also here's an image showing the intake on the opposite side of the snorkel above anyway and on the side of the MB's snorkel: Finally, I will say that what appears to be a muffler and exhaust pipe are molded into the MB Defender 110's base, but the tip itself is missing. Routing exhaust up out of the top of the engine bay and right along the a-pillar would be dangerous without significant heat-resistant materials. As for why Australian truckers want their exhaust tips facing the front of the vehicle, well I don't have an answer for that

That's the part that wasn't making sense to me. Exhaust in every situation I'm familiar with...including big trucks...points back. Intake points forward. Doesn't make much sense having the wind push the exhaust back down the stack as you cruise along at highway speed. As for the casting...I'm not really concerned one way or the other. I used to collect the older semi-real looking garbage trucks, but I sold them off sometime back and haven't bothered to replace them. I don't see myself picking up the new one, and I didn't bother with the one its replacing. I stopped being a completist a long time ago. |

BTW, I see those are MACK trucks. You do know Mack places a big round canister air filter on the outside of the engine compartment, correct? Turns out those Aussie "exhausts" are actually snorkle intakes afterall.![]() Here you can see the intake (snorkle) and exhaust...at the bottom of the snorkle, same as the above pics, is the big round cannister air filter common to Mack trucks. It is the air filter that tells me it is an intake, and the clue was the direction the opening at the top of the stack was pointed. If it were exhaust, it would point back. Mack did not exhaust forward of the cab, exhaust (typical of all big trucks) exits behind the cab except in very unusual applications. Note also the rubber bend below the air filter going into the engine compartment...hot exhaust gases would melt that rubber if it were exhaust. Good thing I did my homework! BTW: ![]() yes, these have dual exhaust. Look really close, you can see the tips sticking up *behind* the sleeper on the green one and behind the cab on the white one, but they are nearly washed out in the pics...you have to look really close now that you know where to look, but they *are* there...in back, pointed back, just like they are supposed to be. I apologize to everyone --- apparently I was wrong about the snorkel thingy on the Garbage Grinder. All of this Aussie exhaust/snorkel information is hurting my head..... Let's just all agree that this isn't Matchbox's best-ever casting. Edited by mbx64, Sep 9 2012, 01:03 PM.

Okay everyone let's relax. This is a hobby forum. --- I really liked the generic Garbage Truck we are saying goodbye too. Strangely enough, there were many things I didn't like, but I still ended up going out of my way to get as many variations as I could! I should dig out one that I've done up the lights and everything on, because it actually looks pretty decent. |

Sorry People, I know this isn't the 2006 Garbage truck, but it's sorta related to the topic, and to the 2006 Garbage Truck I'm posting. It's This: The Waste Management Autocar ACX. Saw this once, and didn't pick it up. Regret it to this day. Here's another Waste Management Garbage Truck that I'd like to own as well: ![]() The 2006 Matchbox Garbage Truck Waste Management Lesney Edition. I absolutely love this model. The tampoed lights, the WM design, and, more importantly, those wheels! What ever happened to them? They were used on nearly every truck in the 2009 Matchbox Poster, but I don't think any ever received them. Hm. |

I can't see the second pic, but that first one looks awesome!!! ...have they ever put a garbage truck in the Real Working Rigs line? I would prefer one of those more just because of the scaling next to their cars would be more accurate I think... but if i ever come across this one, i'd probably pick it up cuz it looks sharp!! |
