Will these be all metal like the Lesney Editions were? I can't wait to see these.

At the Gathering, Matchbox and Mattel representatives were unsure of whether the models would have a metal or plastic base.

However, we know that they will have a box with a picture, and will be fully tampoed.

My guess is that the bases will be plastic due to cost and weight.

I can't wait to see these! Even though I have most of these, I want to see the packaging and the different editions. Thanks for the info!

Put all the models I think should be in the 60th anniversary line in gold, and the ones that shouldn't be in red.

honestly, not very thrilled. Should have included some OLD castings that aren't seen much anymore. Kinda like what the hot ones line did..

:toy: I find the list rather disappointing. Looking at the list it reminds me of a "re-creation" of the Lesney Editions/New Superfast overpriced models. I really don't care if the bases are metal or plastic but I was hoping for the 60th anniversary it would be more than just enhanced emergency vehicles (and mind you I do collect emergency vehicles) and maybe more representative of the history of Matchbox. At this point I can't see adding very many of these to my collection.

For a pic of the packaging...check out this link. Car is the regular first 1-75 release from last year.

I like the packaging! Looks pretty much like the old ones. Any idea how much they'll retail for at stores? I hope its not $20 though.

Thanks for the pic!

I know, right? The Quarry King? What were they thinking?

Thanks very much! It's nice that information like this was provided so quickly.

It does seem to me as if the site has grown since I joined! :D

About the packaging, it looks really nice, very fresh. It'll pop out on the pegs!

You joined in the middle of the summer lull- things always get a bit quieter in the summer and there isn't as much to talk about.

That said, I agree with everyone's assessment of this range. Not really what I'd consider to be a good anniversary gift for the line. Better choices from available castings:

We'll keep the following:

'62 Beetle
Routemaster
VW T2
Mini Cooper S (assuming this is the vintage one and not the new one)
Land Rover Defender

Those should definitely be in this range!

Add to that:

'68 Mustang (Cobra Jet, not California Special)
Lamborghini Miura
Lotus Europa
Dodge Monaco police
'71 Firebird
If you have to have a construction vehicle, either the Tractor Shovel or the Faun dump truck since they're truly Lesney castings.
Jaguar E-Type
Seagrave
Jaguar XJ40
BMW motorcycle
'77 Corvette T-Top
'57 Chevy
Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser

The above are cars I consider heritage models for Matchbox. And the rest of the line should be a mix that collectors will appreciate:

Chevelle convertible
Porsche 914
'69 Camaro
'07 Shelby Mustang convertible
Corvette C6

And two others I agree with from the original list (but I don't consider heritage models for the brand):

Aston Martin DBS
Porsche 911 GT3

TY for providing the list MBX and to 94SS for the link. Had kinda hooped to see more than just extra tampo hits on these and expect some metal bases on most if not all. I had known MB was going to use newer castings in the line from the report Dave Weber gave me the weekend of the Gathering. That said, I wished some of the castings that Swifty suggested had been used over others.

Ok, then the price will be ok for me (provided mattel doesn't raise the price). I didn't want them too expensive, so hearing this news is great.

Thanks Swifty!

It's only a guess based on the previous special series' Matchbox has done in the past. Since there's no new tooling and I somehow doubt we'll see metal bases for this range than I can't see it being more expensive than this.

From what I know, no metal bases on these.

As far as the lineup, there is a very long story as to how these were chosen. Considering the circumstances I am pretty happy...

Please John...do tell. I am assuming that this line was also almost killed and someone was able to turn the tide?

I know it was a Lesney casting already, but I'm disappointed that the '63 Cadillac hearse isn't here. That casting deserves to be released more. I have a list of color schemes that would be perfect for it, too. Black over grey, white over black, black over white, grey over white, white over grey, and grey over black.

Really? I would think things would pick up in the summer for some odd reason.

And yes, I believe they will be in the $3.00 to $4.00 price rang like the Lesney Editions.

And John, what's that story? Can you tell us pweeeeeese? :waiting:

Only about 4 of them I see as interesting enough to buy. It's a rather disappointing list.

Vacations, yardwork, just general enjoying the outdoors.

Fall is when the boards really get active as companies start announcing their lineups for the next year and retailers start getting in large loads of cars for the Christmas rush.

July this year was pretty busy, and I suspect that was because much of North America was in a heatwave at the time (and the USA & Canada account for about 75% of our traffic). Too hot to be outside, and there's no point in mowing scorched grass. Also, the Matchbox Gathering in New Mexico was that month and there's always lots of news coming from there that folks don't want to be the last to know about.

I don't know if there is anything juicy to share, but what I can say is there was a long back and forth on what to do, how to do it, who to market to, and to be honest whether it was important to do anything at all. And remember, those discussions involve a lot of parties who oversee various interests at Mattel. Ultimately a direction was finalized, and a plan put in place. I will have some details on why the direction was chosen in the next report.

Just know that the assumption we all had over the last couple of years that a 60th Anniversary line was a done deal was actually pure speculation.
