I'm going to have to see if my local guy has any of these... if so, if I can sell any, I'll give him a portion and use another chunk to buy some stuff from him.

I never would have guessed these would be so sought after given how many other sports cars, they may not have been pegwarmers, but because Mattel knew they'd be popular and made swarms, they'll never be over $2 on eBay.

I've got 2 of the first ones, they were quite well made.

Yep, this one caught me off guard too. I figured it would just be another $1 issue, but I had a fellow in England wanted one bad enough he offered to trade me quite a few items for mine including a very nice Playart and a small handful of other desirable diecasts. Good thing I found my second copy, I was known for that back then, picking up spares. Got the white'n'silver and the yellow'n'black here loose beside me. I still don't get why they bring such money, doesn't make any sense to me.

Support your local demo derby.

Never thought these would bring any more than a buck. Crazy what things end up going for bigger money and what else stays flat value wise. The JL Clue series is one that pops to mind as pegwarmers turned into collectibles cause of the pieces included.

There are also one or two mystery cars, and that Speed Machines car that sell high.

I like photography...
Hot Wheels recently lost the license to produce this casting. I believe that is what is driving the price up.

Further making this a surprise is the fact that this casting is downright dreadful. I gave mine away or sold it at some point because, despite wanting a Veyron in the collection somewhere, I felt that the overall shape of the car was so poorly represented that it didn't warrant a spot in my collection. In my opinion, nothing looks right about the casting. So consider me in the same boat as everyone else here.

That sounds like a reasonable explanation, or at least significant contributing factor. Anyone who has wanted one of these but thought they could wait feels pressured by the news no future versions will likely be made.
