Ivantt supplies today's truck and it is Hot Wheels 1981 Chevrolet Scottsdale Phone Truck.

Wikipedia.com

The C/K is the name for Chevrolet and GMC's full-size pickup truck line from 1960 until 1999 in the United States, from 1965 to 1999 Canada, from 1964 through 2001 in Brazil, and from 1975 to 1982 in Chile. The first Chevrolet pickup truck appeared in 1924, though in-house designs did not appear until 1930. "C" indicated two-wheel drive and "K" indicated four-wheel drive. The aging C/K light-duty pickup truck was replaced with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra names in 1999 in the US and Canada, and 2001 in Brazil; the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD heavy-duty pickup trucks followed in 2001. Until this time the names Silverado and Sierra where used to identify the trim level of the C/K trucks.

A mid-life cycle cosmetic facelift and mechanical refresh was carried out for the 1981 model year. In response to the recent 1979 energy crisis, the 1981 rework featured several fuel saving techniques to help make the Rounded-Line C/K-Series pickups more fuel efficient. Again, engineers turned to wind tunnels to resculpt the front end with new sheet metal, reducing areas which could hinder air flow and cause drag.[16][34] A sleeker front bow-like look emerged, similar to a ship’s bow with the front end being gently swept back from the center. New dual tier halogen headlamps became available with the Deluxe Front Appearance package.[16] Mechanical updates included more anti-corrosion techniques, reduced weight, and a new 5.0 L 305 cubic inch V-8 with electronic spark control. The 5.7 L 350 cubic inch pushrod V-8 was dropped from the half-ton class pickups, except in California where it was offered in place of the new 5.0 L 305 engine with electronic spark control, which did not meet California's emissions requirements

Ivan's comments - This was a prized find for me at a recent swap meet, coming from a 25 cent box. The condition is almost new. I never saw this casting before, even pictures. It turns out that it was only run in 1984 and 1986, the last issue being from Mexico. What happened to the tooling? It sure would be nice if they reissued this one.

Correct, this is a short run casting that for whatever reason only saw one release in the states. If you found it in a .25 box, you got a heckuva deal!

This has been on my want list for a while and I just found one for a couple bucks at the York toy show. Another good choice for TOTD!

I have to agree with the others, that is a good one for COTD. I would like to nominate the first pic for picture of the month.

Only worth $2 or $3, loose? Are they serious? That surprises me, especially based on prices they attach to other more common cars.

I have two of these; the second being a condition upgrade, but now I need to find both of them to check if one is a Marks Phone Co versus just Phone Co.

I saw that too, but I really don't think the prices have been upgraded for quite some time now, especially since a lot of the newer stuff, even premium stuff, is listed with no prices at all.

Robin does a great job keeping up with the castings and major variations, so I can't really bark too loud about not keeping up with current prices too. That said, this casting is a bit of a sleeper. A lot of HW guys don't even know this one is out there, so they don't know to watch and they don't bid...so these come around every once in awhile and get snatched up for a song because no one recognizes them....

I came across my 'upgraded' version in a box a couple of days ago. It is the plain "Phone Co." version, matching the COTD version.

My not-as-nice copy is still hiding somewhere around here. I am really curious to find out if it might be the Mark's Phone Co. version.

Spent part of my weekend in my cellar going thru old die cast boxes that have been stored away for over 20 years. I found my phone truck and mine is the Mark's version.
