Today's space vehicle of the day is from Firehawk73's collection, and is Hasbro's Colonial Viper (Battlestar Galactica).

Wikipedia

The Colonial Viper is a fictional spacecraft in the Battlestar Galactica science-fiction franchise. It is the primary fighter spacecraft type used by the human protagonists in this fictional universe. Appearing in both the 1978 original series and the 2003 reimagined series, as well as various derivative works, the single-pilot spacecraft are carried aboard Battlestar Galactica and are the humans' main tools of defense against the fictional universe's antagonists - the cybernetic Cylon race.

I figured this one would be bit of a curve ball for Car Of The Day, but it does meet the 3 inch rule and it is made out of diecast.

Wikipedia

In the original run of Battlestar Galactica, the Colonial Viper is the only known fighter flown by Colonial Pilots, referred to as "Colonial Warriors". There is only one known model of Viper seen in the series. The Vipers are launched from a long tube in one of a Battlestar's landing bays, assisted by a powered catapult mechanism. Vipers typically use all three of their engines for powered flight, and can use a "Turbo" boost for greater speed, analogous to a modern fighter plane's afterburner.

Curve ball? Yeah, that's it! Curve ball!

I remember the original series with Lorne Greene (best known for Bonanza) and Richard Hatch (?), a heartthrob actor who played various parts over the years who I don't think did much after this series went off the air, and the fellow who played his wingman, who went on to be in the original A-Team (I want to say as Face).

I haven't paid any attention since.

I can see how a collector of tv and movie diecast would enjoy this: the detail is adequate, and the subject matter is fairly unique. It's not my cuppa tea for the same reason I don't collect HW blimps or airplanes or the JL Lost in Space vehicles...I like my diecast to be able to roll. But if static models are your thing, go for it!

Wes, there's nothing stopping you from simply tossing your flying replicas back and forth across the room :)

I've never been into this show- it looks to me like this vehicle was modeled largely on the Star Wars X-Wing, which debuted the year before.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I've made flying stuff my whole lifetime career, and they are just as much fun as cars and trains! And I still love my cars, as everyone here knows it.
Wes, a HW blimp is a good start for a diversion... :P

Guys, you are a bad influence, you know? I was living happily in my ignorance that there existed any BSG Viper in 3 inches... and then you had to show this one...

Well, I could not stop 'till I found one reasonably priced in eBay... and now it should be flying its way to Spain.

Oh yes, the itch was satisfied... and the Colonial Viper has landed today into my collection... along with JL's Galileo Shuttle (Star Trek), Hasbro's Anakin's Podracer (Star Wars) and Galoob's Gian Speeder (Star Wars)...
