The car for today is ERTL's 1936 Ford from the TV show Thomas & Friends.

Wikipedia.com

Thomas & Friends (Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends until 2002) is a British children's television series, first broadcast on the ITV network on 4 September 1984. It is based on The Railway Series of books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher Awdry. These books deal with the adventures of a group of anthropomorphised trains and road vehicles who live on the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were based on stories Awdry told to entertain his son Christopher during his recovery from measles. Many of the stories are based on events from Awdry's personal experience.

Chevrolet regained the sales lead at the end of 1936, but the Ford still sold extremely well. A new club cabriolet model was introduced with a fully framed windshield and weatherproof top, and the convertible sedan gained the popular integrated trunkback design.
The look was updated with an inverted pentagonal grille with all-vertical bars beneath a prominent hood and three horizontal chrome side strips (on DeLuxe models). A concealed horn, long a prominent part of the Ford's design, also brought the car into modern times. The new trucks continued with the old grille. Other major changes for 1936 were the use of pressed steel "artillery" solid wheels instead of wire wheels.

ERTL released this casting some time in the mid 90s and is a pretty accurate rendering of a mid 30s Ford.

:toy: I confess - I like Thomas the Tank Engine as do my two granddaughters! I have not seen this car before - remember a blue version for Sir toppin. This one reminds me of the castings used in the Dick Tracy series - it is a nice looking Ford and even the white tires work knowing it is from a cartoon/book series.

The deep red with gold trim works really well with the white wheels! I've not seen this version before, clearly it is a Christmas issue, and I wonder if perhaps an employee "only" issue? Perhaps it was a mail-away offer for some club or something, but I'm not familiar with any for Ertl, although I do have an RC Christmas issue from '97 I picked up awhile back (different casting).

this is the one I know specifically as the Thomas Train issue, still on card that clearly marks the show. As John pointed out, it is labelled as Sir Topham Hat's car.

forgive the blurry pic, but this is the Dick Tracy movie issue. I'm not sure which came first, I'm inclined to think the DT movie version was first, but I could easily be mistaken.

I have a longstanding like for the '36 Ford dating back to the redline era, as one of my first and favorite Hot Wheels was a 36 Ford (several, actually).

So the CotD Christmas issue would be most welcome in my collection, I will need to watch for one as well!

Thomas I watched a few minutes here and there not a fan of t.v. I liked the scenery .

The 36 ford Ertl did a nice job. At first glance thought it was a Johnny Lightning white lightning car with the dumb white tires. I am not into red. Now this one I would not have bought

But I have the black Dick Tracy version and I like it .The front bumper was a nice touch that had that little dip in it look just like the real car.

I actually broke out my Thomas the Tank Engine book the other day in order to post this somewhat terrifying story:

Quote:

"You impertinent scallywags," Duke would say indignantly. "Whatever are you young engines coming to nowadays?"
"Never mind, Granpuff. We're only young once."
"Well, you'd better mind; unless you want to end up like No. 2."
"Ooooh! Granpuff. Whatever happened?"
"No. 2," said Duke, "was American, and very cocky. He rode roughly and often came off the rails. I warned him to be careful. 'Listen, Bud," he drawled.'In the States we don't care a dime for a few spills.' 'We do here,' I said, but he just laughed.
But he didn't laugh when the Manager took away his wheels, and said he was going to make him useful at last."
"Why? W-W-What did he do?"
"He turned him into a pumping engine. That's what. He's still there, behind our shed."

Wow. That is a little spooky...

I do like Thomas the Tank Engine's scenery myself. It's very realistic, yet cartoony at the same time. Maybe simplified realism?

Wes, you picked up on something that I didm't realize....the red goes so well with the gold trim and tires. I like it a bit more than the blue or black version, and I am very fussy liking ANY car with gold bumpers or wheel rims.
That said, I loved seeing the blue and black versions, and now I do want to watch for any of these vrsions to add to my collection. This is a good casting.

I have the blue Thomas version, this was IIRC a holiday release for either Big R or Tractor Supply farm stores.

Little-known fact: this casting was tooled up from the 5-window coupe/cabriolet AMT 2-in-1 kit that was returned to a 5-window coupe top for the Dick Tracy model kit series, which is why detail is so good. And IIRC in the real Shining Time Station, Sir Topham Hatt drove an Austin A40 Devon.
