Today's car of the day is Hasbro's 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP.

Wikipedia

The Pontiac Solstice was a sports car from the Pontiac division of General Motors. Introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, the Solstice roadster began production in Wilmington, Delaware, starting in mid-2005 for the 2006 model year. The exterior styling of the production Solstice is similar to that of the 2002 Solstice concept that preceded it.

The Transformer movies inspired the addition of numerous GM vehicles to the small-scale marketplace. Hasbro seemed to have the largest market share of the small-scale modern Transformer cars. The Autobot named Jazz was originally a Porsche 935 race car in his alternate mode, but for the 2007 Transformers movie, Jazz became a 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP. Although the Hasbro car bodies are made of plastic, a quality coat of paint disguises the use of plastic very nicely. This is a lesson I wish Matchbox would learn, with their ever increasing use of plastic bodied models. It is not the plastic that makes a toy look cheap - it is when the plastic looks like plastic even from several feet away.

Wikipedia

The GXP version of the Solstice debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2006. It is powered by a new 2.0 L (121.9 cu in) I4 Ecotec engine equipped with a dual-scroll turbocharger. The engine's output is 260 hp and 260 lb ft. This is the highest specific output of any engine in the history of General Motors at 2.1 hp per cubic inch, and it is the first gasoline direct injection engine from an American automaker. According to pontiac.com, the GXP goes 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in under 5.5 seconds.

Wikipedia

In April 2009, after GM announced the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010, CEO Fritz Henderson stated that the Solstice would not continue under another GM brand. Although they considered selling the Wilmington plant and the Solstice/Sky products to an outside business, the Wilmington assembly plant closed in July 2009. In October 2009, the new DeLorean Motor Company expressed interest in continuing production of the Solstice, but production has not resumed to date.

I'm a vintage car guy...can't help it. Still, as newer cars go I am somewhat surprised that makes and models such as this aren't better covered. These are the future classics, the kinds of cars guys now are going to want to see sitting on their shelves. It really is a puzzle to me that even HW and MBX are skipping such an opportunity. Stuff like the Solstice and Crossfire would fit easily into the lineup at Greenlight (or Tomy/JL), and if M2 decides to dabble in more recent models they at least would receive proper treatment. This car would be a natural for Autoworld as well.

I realize "cost of tooling," etc, but it does seem rather short sighted to continually focus on the same handful of cars to the exclusion of so many other worthy possibilities. I find it difficult to believe a Solstice or Crossfire in scale wouldn't sell at least as well as a new Camaro, Challenger or SSR *if* done properly and not made to look like a generic toy.

Support your local demo derby.

Maisto and Matchbox both offered up copies of the Solstice. The basic platform was shared across the Saturn, Pontiact, and Opel. I really liked the concept car from '02 that I saw in Chicago of that year.

Think the link is missing an all black one from the modern SF line.
