Today's car of the day is Minichamps' 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S Convertible.

Wikipedia

The Porsche 997 (Nine-Nine-Seven) is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 model manufactured and sold by German manufacturer Porsche between 2004 (as Model Year 2005) and 2012. Production of the Carrera and Carrera S coupés began in early 2004, all-wheel drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S versions began shipping in November 2005, Turbo and GT3 derivatives went on sale in late 2006 and the 911 GT2 in 2007. In addition to the coupe and cabriolet versions, Targa versions of the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S were also available, which carry on with the "glass canopy" roof design used on all Targa 911s since the Type 993 Generation 911.

This Porsche was part of the short-lived series of collector models in 1/64 scale by Minichamps. Minichamps has long been a respected name in larger scales of model cars, and their small scale models are exquisite. The level of detail came at a price, however, and the small-scale collecting community showed they were not willing to pay the higher prices, and this line was cancelled after about a year.

Wikipedia

The 997 is the most commercially successful 911 of all time, having sold 100,000 units between its introduction in 2005 and July 2007. While the exterior styling is slightly changed compared to the 996, it is again more evolution rather than revolution; typical of Porsche and the Carrera. The rear bodywork is a total of 88 mm (3.5 in) wider than its predecessor. However, the most notable aesthetic difference between the 997 and the 996 is the return to circular headlights like those of pre-996 Carreras, with separate indicator units. The interior has been almost entirely re-invented and all the controls are new; however, it is more reminiscent of classic 911 interiors than of the outgoing 996. The body in general remains low profile with a drag coefficient of 0.29 for the Carrera and .30 for the Carrera S.

Wikipedia

For the first time, development of the cabriolet version of the 997 led the design and engineering effort at Porsche with the coupe following. Porsche applied the logic that if you started with the more difficult cabriolet challenges (for chassis stiffness) the coupe version would simply be that much more rigid. Despite additional weight, the cabriolet versions attain nearly the same performance figures as their coupe counterparts. Even the rear tail comes up slightly higher on the cabriolets to compensate for differences in drag over the canvas top vs. the smoother coupe shape.

Support your local demo derby.

That's one dandy of a Porsche model. Headlights look like they should work!

It is such a pity the story of the Minichamps 64 line... it was the comeback of Paul's Model Art to the 1:64 scale after their first attemp (Microchamps) back in the 90's... and the models were so amazing...

The photos above do not show one of the distinctive features of these miniatures from others (including Kyosho)... and it is the details in the interior, including the dashboard. Only recent Kyoshos (such as the Pagani Huayra that was featured in CotD some weeks ago) are starting to get some interior detailing....

It is unclear the exact combination of reasons that made the line stop, but some sources make their legal issues with AUTOart as one of the reasons that placed the nail in the coffin...

The wheels are indeed nice, but check the last photo... see all these detailing in the dashboard, steering wheel, door internal handles... those are things you rarely see in a 1:64 car...

You wouldn't happen to have a Bentley Brooklands that you could let go of, would you?

I only just received my first Minichamps 64 cars earlier this month. High price or not, there are easily 10 basic line HW or MB cars worth of detail in these things They are stellar. The 100% Hot Wheels line was my gold standard for true 1/64 cars, and these absolutely blow them out of the water (to be fair, they're several years newer as well). I guess you just have to have your line half full of American muscle cars to succeed in small scale.
