If I remember right, almost all of these are Ultraman characters. The Cosmo is pretty much famous now along with the Imperial, but I don't remember the others much. Also, the Hot Wheels versions were a lot more detailed. |

I think the silver 'Imperial' is not a '57 model. The front wing window is too small. '57-'63 Imperials used the smaller style front vent windows. The model shown has more reminiscent windows and roof line of a '64-'66 model though it's not easy to tell. Camaro don't look half bad for what it is. Thanks for sharing the pics Rob. G!

Hi, both Bandai but both different, the Charawheels version is a little smaller and better detailed. Here is some text I found regarding the original car. In 1967, a very popular television series named "Ultra-Seven" debuted on Japanese TV. Ultra-Seven is the story of a spaceman (Ultra-Seven) who fights evil aggressors as a member of the Earth Defense Force. The car that the EDF used for battle and VIP transport was named "POINTER". This car is as famous in Japan as the Batmobile is in America. Most people never knew that POINTER was based on a heavily modified 1957 Imperial. This was due to the small TV screens of the time and the extensive modifications to the original, not to mention that 57 Imperials were very rare in Japan. The original POINTER was not in great shape during the series and, in fact, did not run. During filming it was pushed around by the TV crew. The TV series only ran 1 year and after the series was cancelled, POINTER was given to a kindergarten. After that, no one knows what became of her. It is presumed she was scrapped and crushed. I knew the Charawheels line featured many vehicles unfamiliar here in America, so it is nice to learn a bit about one of them. Sad that the real one was destroyed, although it is commendable that it was donated to a kindergarten. Perhaps a museum might have been a better alternative in hindsight... If the show only lasted one season in the late 60s, I presume then that the Camaro and SUV are more recent, "fantasy" additions to this series? Surely these models were not featured at the time? BTW....have you ever pushed around an old Imperial? I've pushed an old New Yorker, so pushing an old Imperial is quite a fete! |

Keep in mind, Ultra-Seven was technically not a standalone show; it was a part of the Ultraman franchise, a very famous example of early prime time Japanese science fiction. The franchise has been ongoing since 1966, with the newest entry coming out this year (Ultraman Ginga). The Chevy Blazer and Camaro were both mecha robots from the series Ultraman Tiga, which has been aired on Saturday mornings in the US on 4kids if I remember right (though the 4kids version is obviously going to be a very poor example due to the endless cuts and changes required by US TV censors.) The Mazda Cosmo was from the Return of Ultraman series (which has apparently been rerun multiple times in the US as well,) and the Corvair was from the original Ultraman series. Of course, it should be noted that while the "Pointer" was from an era where people did not recognize American cars on Japanese TV, the Camaro and Blazer came from GM's heyday era in Japan during the mid 1990s, back when the Chevrolet brand was seen as a popular, expensive import brand in Japan (the Astro was actually better received in Japan than in the US). Bandai also makes model kits of both the Corvair from Ultraman and the Imperial from Ultraseven. I have the Corvair and it's roughly 1/64 scale: Science Special Search Party SSSP Exclusive Vehicle by Michael, on FlickrUnfortunately I don't have the skills to paint it properly
