Isn't the excavator just a rebadged Hot Wheels, like the other CAT models during this time

The Peterbilt casting, I believe, because of the base, is exclusive to this set.

Hmm, wonder if there were any other of these playsets...the entire series would be interesting.

Bill, Sorry I'm not selling right now, but I'll keep you in mind if I do.

Cody, You're right about that excavator being an X-HWs, and there were other rebadged HWs in the Matchbox CAT series' as well, but many others were new MBX castings, I believe they were only used in the various CAT series' offered in those days, and then you had some retooled basic Mbx, like the Peterbilt dump truck with the added plow.

Speedyexpress, Yes there were others in the Famous Places series, what I found was that there were at least two others, and I remember seeing them in stores at the time, but only picked up the Berlin Wall, the others were "Golden Gate Bridge", and then "South Pole Amundsen Scott Station", but not sure of any others.

Wasn't the Amundsen-Scott Station the one with the Cat Tractor, the tracked trailer, and the building that had to be assembled?

I think that is right, I believe the building was a quonset hut. I remember wanting that set when I got the Berlin set back when available, but my budget or something got in the way.

Except you're just learning about the very things you're collecting (i.e. solution to a problem that never really existed)... :duh: ^_^

Great stuff BTW.. That excavator looks excellent!

Here is the South Pole Amundsen-Scott Station. It is one I did not DLM since I share the same last name (except mine is son not sen) with the Norwegian explorer. (And you all wondered why I lived here in the artic wonderland!). I usually have it hanging someplace in my office - great conversation piece

I find it interesting that in the picture on the back it shows the models in white - does anyone know if they were ever issued in that color?

White would have been more fitting to be in the Arctic, but the actual Challenger only came in CAT yellow to my knowledge. Possibly licensing issues, maybe?
