Bought a 1967 ANC Acme Novelty Catalogue Canada from the flea market today.

It had a Matchbox excerpt in it which I thought was nice to see!

It's fun to think that when this catalogue was new, if you wanted any of these Matchbox you could simply just order it,

and for them prices too!

I had all those sets a few years ago, but sold them to help fund my Alfa Romeo.

Very cool! Sure wish we could order them now, rather than waiting for re-stock.

I really like looking at old catalogues and seeing what all they offered - neat to see all the Matchbox models one could have picked out back then.

I see some interesting "set cars" here, only available in these sets...not sold singly.

Right off I see the yellow Ford GT40 in the race set, not sure which of the open wheelers but the red ones I think and possibly the blue one were not available alone.

If the red pickup in the construction set is the Jeep Gladiator, and the interior is red (really hard to tell from the image), that one is a desirable variation.

The car carrier set (which would be my personal favorite of the bunch) looks like it has the Pontiac Grand Prix in red.

In the vacation set I see a Land Rover in an odd color I haven't seen before. Also the Studebaker wagon...is that the one with the retractable roof, and is that a camera guy I see in there? (I thought it was Husky/Corgi jr had the camera car?)

There may be others, I don't know early MBX well at all.

Just a little point of reference...in '67 in Southern California you could buy 3 gallons of gas for $1. Or 3 packs of cigarettes (don't ask, I was six at the time).

If we go with gas at $3.33 a gallon today (last night I saw it here for $3.58), that means 67 prices are about one tenth of what they are today, +/-.

If we go with cigs at $5 a pack, that means $1 then is about $15 today. In real terms, not being an economist absorbed and devoted to keeping close tabs on these things, the reality is probably somewhere in the middle. (If cigs didn't have the Fed tax added a few years ago, they would probably be closer to the $3.33 mark too)

Point being...that race set that sold back then for $7.29, would be priced today somewhere around $73 retail. If you were lucky enough to catch it on clearance it would probably be in the $35-40 range, brand new overstock.

Hmmm...suddenly those $5 premium issue cars by M2 and AW and others don't look quite so pricey now. Stated another way...if you were lucky enough to get a new Hot Wheels redline or a regular wheel Matchbox from that era, your folks had to give up 3 gallons of gas, or three packs of smokes, or ten loaves of bread on sale (day old), or 3 gallons of milk, or....I think you get the drift.

Cry all day long if you wish about how Matchbox and everyone else has slumped to plastic and cheapness to maintain the $1 level...or wake up to the reality that those cars today full retail would be $10 in today's money.

(BTW...this post isn't "aimed" at you personally, Dug. I hear the comments about price vs. cheapness quite a bit, so this post is a general one)

Juantoo3, I know what you mean, toy prices weren't really that cheap in those days, at least I know my parents didn't get us too many of them, sometimes used too, not that we went without, but a few Matchbox on birthdays, and maybe a small something else too, and possibly a gift set like one of those shown, including a non-Matchbox plastic play garage at Christmas.

but yeah, I usually like to consider what average people made back in those days too when figuring todays value on a similar product of a past era....so we know prices on many things then and now can be relative, and I think basic Matchbox are an amazingly low cost today.

My earlier post comment about price was an afterthought anyway, but I was mainly thinking about the comparison of the really high cost of buying one of those sets today from a collection, ya know what I mean. :D

edit:
I forgot to add that the less common formula cars from the racing set, are the red BRM, and the orange Lotus, although I thought I read somewhere that these two occasionally showed up as a single as well, not positive about that, but they're still the harder variations, and the yellow Ford GT of course, but that's really hard to find, and then you also mentioned the Land Rover in another set, the first regular issue of this was a dark green, this kind of looks like it could be that color, but it does look slightly off green than normal, could be just the photo though.

The sea foam Opel Diplomat in the transporter set is the rare one of the bunch. Of course, the yellow #41 Ford GT is pretty spendy too.
