"Patience certainly is a virtue," they all said. Apparently, 'they' have never had to wait for a highly-anticipated model from their favorite diecast car company.

One heck of a wait this one was, too. What was it? Nearly a year and a half ago that we were told the BMW 1M would be introduced to the Matchbox brand? I believe it was. And, I can make my point seem even more gratifying when I recall to you that there were no new sports cars introduced for 2012, which means that we have waited a full two and a half years for any modern sports car in general.

A lot of ground was lost in that time. Car after car, slowly slipping away, inevitably left out of the Matchbox line. Between Audi, Porsche, Tesla, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and other makes, things definitely looked dim.

However, a car was indeed announced in July of 2012, and that car was the notorious BMW 1M. Notorious for what, you ask? Oh, just for being as cool as dry ice, as nimble as a jackrabbit and as visually-appealing as Jennifer Lawrence. So, you know, a pretty notorious car, and that is simply in the true automotive world.

So when you pop said car down to 1:64, the frenzy actually increases because there is nothing else better than the 1M in the Matchbox Line. The BMW 1M has shown-up a hefty amount of cars in the real world, so bring that domination down to the Matchbox world, where cars have been extinct for a couple of years, and you have an equation for some fantastically ecstatic collectors.

I am pleased to proclaim that this model was done as realistically and accurately as possible. Only a purist approach was taken on this model, and that can be recorded from every single angle I was able to photograph of it. The casting itself is one to look at with complete admiration, as I do with the Panamera and the Caterham. Its flaring wheel arches, gaping front air intakes, tidy build and chiseled sideline were all perfected in this casting. Even fairly minute details, like the door handle and exhaust tips, were executed by someone who knew what they were doing. The BMW 1M evokes so much nostalgia from the New Golden Era, particularly because it came from it, mentally speaking. It is nostalgic of the Golden Era because it is exactly what a modern car was like from the golden era: simply stunning, and simply Matchbox.

One thing that can make a great casting much worse is poorly designed tampo schemes. Those danged tampoes are at it again, but this time for the best. The front grille, headlights, and license plates all receive a little aesthetic boost with some paint-detailing. The headlights really pop, and show off Mattel's light-replicating ability due to improve technology over past years.
Posted Image

This is where things get a little sticky. Tampoes do, in fact, riddle the rear of this car, between the taillights, license plate, BMW badge and M emblem, but the lights are half-assed. Yes, there is no other word for it. The tampo-printer's inability to wrap around a model means that there is a prominent cut-off in the middle of the 1M's taillight. It is nothing but unfortunate to see number-crunching and labor efficiency trickling down to the product itself, but I do understand. I may not like it, but I know that there are more important things to worry about in this world than a fully-wrapped rear-light tampo on a Matchbox car. I get that they cannot do it, and I respect the Team's honesty. This car is generally magnificent, and the rear taillight is the one-and-only con that I can work up about this car. Not to mention that its one flaw could be completely solved in a premium line (I am looking at you, 2015), so this model has the chance to be nearly-perfect.

I am also happy to see that the 10-spoke wheels were chosen, because they match the 1M's rims much more accurately than the sporty 5-spokes. That does not mean that this car would not look hot without them, though.

MB893 BMW 1M is one of the greats. When I placed it in my mahogany and red-velvet showcase on the wall, with 47 of my other best Matchbox sports cars that I have, I was choked-up by how beautiful it looked sitting there with all of them, highlighted by its orange paint in the dark and crisp showcase. It fit with the rest of the cars so easily, that I could have believed this model was released in 2010. It is one of true colors, and I cannot wait to see where this car takes us in Matchbox's future.

Nic you ba$t@rd, you have the Mercedes McLaren SLR :D I'm highly envious, it's another one on my most wanted list. :toy: :bangles:
Now, to the M1. It's a great casting let down as you say by some tampo issues. The rear lights look a little naff being cut off as they are and the lack of BMW badge on the bonnet makes the front look a little incomplete. Otherwise I like it and it's a very welcome addition to my collection.

Nice writeup. Even though I am not a fan of foreign cars, I did add this one to my collection. I agree, the tire and color choice for this one is great. I can live with the tail lights, at least it's not plastered with stripes and nonsense words.

One that I must add to my collection!! I've said it before, but I'll say it again: This is how every Matchbox should look like.

Well done on the review! I very much enjoyed reading it!

A poor mans Bimmer with a fast motor and some tweaks in real life, its a .99 cent toy for a tiny child and it is made by a once household name and sold by Walmart and whoever will now take the stock.

Looks nice. Can't say I'm the biggest fan of the real car, but I'm going to add this one because I like variety.

I agree that every Matchbox should be like this, but we are not the ones running the company, unfortunately. ;) Nor are we the main customer, so we must sit back and enjoy the ride, or salvage what we can try to enjoy, anyways!

Thanks everyone for the positive comments.

Support your local demo derby.

I like everything about this one except for the fail on the tailights. Let's nominate your 1st group picture for POTM.

Mwahhahahahahaha! Of course, but we must keep our plans secret! :secret:

Thanks Zach for nominating one of my photos. I was very pleased with some of the group shots, except for the blue tint occasionally found in the background. I forgot to close my shades, so sunlight came in, and my camera is set on tungsten. :duh:

I get the same way all the time.
Even if the view count goes up it's still more comforting to see some comments, especially if there's a lot of pictures that took a fair bit of effort.
