There was a line of Tonka 1:64th sold about 10 years ago and they were all Maisto models. I would bet this came from that line. |

As much as I can, which isn't gospel, only from looking at these things over the years and picking up the occasional model. There is a series marketed as "Tonkas" in 1/64, but a quick look shows most of the models are former Maisto and that Maisto made the models sold as Tonka. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some examples from about the time they first came out, +/- about the year 2000. In this series early on were some models made to look vaguely like old Tonkas...a crane, a bulldozer, a dump truck, a mid-50s Ford pickup, and probably others I'm not remembering right off. The Ford connection to Jeep (GP) goes back to WWII, when Jeep couldn't keep up with the government contract to supply Jeeps, Ford was asked to step up and make some as well, so there are Ford GPs out there from WWII...and that *might* provide a little end around licensing, but I can't say for sure. The Hasbro connection is a bit more vague to me. I *think* they hold the name brand "Tonka," which if true means that Hasbro contracted Maisto to produce this line of mini-Tonkas. I know they were around at least 5 years, likely more and may still be being produced. Side note, Hasbro does hold the G.I. Joe franchise, and Maisto did a short line of military vehicle with that brand attached as well, so it may well be that Hasbro and Maisto have an arrangement of sorts. |

You've inspired me to photograph the Ford GP / GPW models I have. The Ford GP was another type of Jeep used in WWII. Both they and Willys produced Jeeps. I believe that the main difference between the two is the number of slots in the grille.

There are several Tonka produced maisto, or Maisto produced Tonka's. In Canada Zellers carried the TONKA line of maisto's |

Here's an example of what I was referring to:![]() ![]() I know two of these were found in "Tonka" packaging, the red striped and the silver. The green also has the Tonka name on it, so I presume also found in Tonka packaging. The first one I found, yellow with the chrome wheels, was part of a large multicar set, purchased around 1997. That is the first I had seen of this casting. First Maisto issued this, probably as a Walmart special or something. Later, when Hasbro contracted Maisto (speculation on my part), this was one of the previously issued Maistos that was featured with a different paint job as a Tonka. Indeed, there are three total in this pic that have Tonka written on them. Along with known Maistos, there were some models unique to the Tonka series, that were patterned on old Tonka toys, like this: ![]() These are not found outside of this series. |

I believe there was a silver crane in the Tonka series that was a "chase" model - highly unusual for either Maisto or Tonka. (Maisto did produce chase vehicles in their high-end series, such as Pro Rods and Red 100, but to my knowledge, this was the only chase car they released in any form of the basic lineup.) |

Ford manufactured Jeeps for Willys/Overland during WW2. Ford General Purpose or Government/Passenger. That is also where the Jeep name originated. Here are a couple shots of my friend's 1946 CJ-2A. ![]() ![]()

Actually, there was a chase each of the first three years of the Tonka series. I think the regulars were numbered 1 through 50, and the "chase" was number 51. Even though they are chases, there was nothing other than the number on the cardboard to distinguish them as such, and out of the package you would never know if you didn't know already. One was called Blizzard Tamer I think, a snowplow. I forget the other two, but they were construction equipment, a bulldozer maybe and a crane. Somewhere around here I've got the first three, it's not like there were scalpers looting them at the time. |

The Marvel Comics series of basic line cars, also had a "chase" car or two, although they didn't seem difficult to find. |

Not to go off subject here, but thought I'd mention that Mitsubishi also produced Jeeps, but starting sometime after the war, in the 50s. I don't know the story behind that but the Tomica Jeep is actually representing the Mitsubishi, although I don't know what the difference would be. Tomy
