My Favorite brand to collect!; What's yours?

What is your favorite brand to collect and why?

For me it is J.E. Toys mostly because they are so hard for me to find (have only been able to find them loose and used) and every time I do find one it is different from those I already have. I also love to collect the brands that are uncollectible as I can find nearly any collectible brand at any time on ebay. These also have a fun cartoon feeling to them.

Here are a few examples (always looking for more no matter what condition)

The answer to your question is easy. I like to collect Johnny Lightnings because they have such a large range of diecast but since they are not in the retail market anymore. Autoworld and GreenLight will be picking up the slack because the level of detail they offer. I like realism to the diecast that I collect but a few oddballs cars do strike my fancy from time to time.

Greenlight is my favorite brand with Auto World sneaking up fast. I am a Mustang/Ford truck collector as you might know. M2 makes a nice product. Their '70 Mustang casting is a little off-scale compared to the other generations and I am unhappy with the opening doors and unsightly door gaps, but I have most all of them. My Johnny Lightning Mustang/Shelby Mustang collection is almost complete.

What ever I collect has to have detail and be somewhat real looking. Antiques and beat up and chipped do not interest me. I would rather pay a little more for a nice piece than find a bushel basket of overused nostalgia for the same price. I got hosed a few times on eBay for products not matching the description. Those derelict cars have since been restored to show pieces.

Probably M2, just because I always find something I like in each lineup. I'll run across stuff that's three or four years old and still pick it up because I've never seen it before (and, of course, because it looks good).

Siku, because it's pretty well detailed, full of function, but not fragile.

Matchbox, tradition I guess. I've owned Matchbox since I was 2 or 3. The Lesney Era I love to collect, especially the Regular Wheel ear as it's way better than what's available now (except for some of that weird Superfast stuff).

Tomica, as they don't seem to have changed a lot, plus they're well detailed, and packed with function. Even the wheels on them seem to have not changed in like 30 years. Plus, because they aren't really popular here, I can get them at local discount stores for like $2 a piece or less.

Kenner Fast 111s, as they were only available new for 2 years. \

Lledo, as it's founder was Jack Odell, one of Matchbox's founders.

I'm with those that can't think of just one single brand. I like so many brands, and for different reasons.

For nostalgia, I always come back to HW redlines and Topper JLs, with a soft spot for Tootsies, because those are what I grew up with.

I've grown to appreciate Impy a great deal, their early stuff is remarkable for the detail crammed into their models for the day and age.

Aurora Cigarbox never ceases to amaze me.

I am still learning things with Husky and Corgi jr, and I am ever on the hunt for a copy of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

Matchbox almost goes without saying, they are nice models.

I was introduced to Tomica in the Pocket Car era, and grew to like them as well.

I was floored when Playing Mantis reissued the old Topper castings, and went on from there to build a diecast empire.

I missed out on the launch of Greenlight and M2, but I do appreciate the work they produce.

I know RC / Ertl don't get much respect, but there are a lot of models in their line(s) that I like a lot, thankfully many of them got the opportunity to surface again after the buyout of JL.

I have a soft spot for Muscle Machines that dates back to my schoolyard days and the Odd Rods bubble gum cards. I think Rohan Day recaptured that whole automotive wackiness, and so many others have tried since but just not tapped that same genius. For the same reason I dearly love the MBX Cosmic Blues and all the variants.

AutoWorld is impressing me, they make some very nice models so far.

And there are so many dark horses in the race with so many surprise hits and home runs that come in from left field, I am surprised so often with models I've never seen before that are simply stellar! Makers like Polistil, Mercury, Lion Car, Siku, Schuco, Kyosho, Aoshima, and on and on and on.

I can't pick just one favorite. I can't. I've tried.

Matchbox would be the easy top of the list for me, I grew up with them, and saved stored away many of my childhood Lesney Mbx (along with a few other brands) for many years before I rediscovered their coolness and decided to collect toy cars, but I also admire the play value they had, and still, when the modern Mbx models offer a great play feature, I really appreciate those too. While I like realism best, it only has to be a realistic looking design to make it a toy vehicle I want, it doesn't have to be an authentic scaled replica.

Next place would go to Majorette, I didn't have any as a kid, I discovered them the first year I started collecting Mbx though and wished I did have 'em as a kid, but I liked them for that same reason as Mbx, a realistic toy with a lot of models to collect, and with play value.

Tomica is next, lots of emergency vehicles, but they were/are harder to get a hold of, and cost a bit more for me to collect very many of them like I had with collecting Mbx or or Majo.

Siku would be next as far as me admiring them and wanting to collect more, with plenty of emergency vehicles, but they have the same restrictions for me as Tomica.

The order of the rest would be more difficult, so I wont try, but I also like Playart, HWs, Impy, Corgi Jr/Husky, Zylmex, Yatming, along with other less popular brands, and I wont list all the rest I like right now, because I really just like.... toy cars. :D

Majorette- nostalgia reasons because I was brought up on them.
Lesney- Classic designs and cool subjects.
Corgi Juniors- I like big Corgi castings and these are just as cool. Also the only 1978 Dodge Magnum diecast (haven't found one yet)
Zylmex, Yat Ming and Playart- Low survival rate, interesting subjects, incredible availability of variations between the brands, great custom fodder, usually inexpensive
Tomica- JDM, RoW European cars and dioramas. Nuff said.
Hot Wheels- Traditional, low cost and good variety.
JL- Now an orphan brand, great subjects, numerous funeral car castings

I kind of like the way Chris summed it up:

Hot Wheels: Most affordable and have really nice paint for the most part when it's not doing the decals or whatever and great variety. More plentiful than any,

Matchbox: They have some yet neater more real looking cars than Hot Wheels however the paint isn't as well done.

M2: Love the old iron cars of yesterday but if the doors don't mesh I'm not too happy with the product.

AutoWorld: The best of all worlds and thank God for the no opening doors.

Greenlight: Nice but the product is limited here more so than any others.

Oops Johnny Lightning: Great cars during the Praying Mantis times and later toward the end just awful but with the old ones still existing on ebay it still makes it a fun brand.

Majorette and Matchbox from the '70s and '80s, Pure for nostalgia reasons and becuase - in my opnion - these brands where at the top of their abilities in that era.

As for other brands, all kind of models from the '70s and '80s, this for the same reason.

Support your local demo derby.

I've found that limiting myself to just one favorite brand is a bane method of collecting. There's too many different brands from various time periods I love. The late 70s through late 80s all metal Yatmings with opening doors and 6 spokes, early 00s to late 00s JL, 70s era Schuco, late 90s ERTL American muscle and early 2010s M2 are all among my favorites. Heck, even the most basic of the modern era $1 5 spoke muscle cars from HWs are a fun sub-genre to collect to me.

Cool pics I have not seen these cars before.

What is your favorite brand to collect and why ... ?

For me there is not a single simple answer to that question so perhaps it has something to do with ADD lol.

Generally speaking I prefer cars that were produced at least 30-40 years ago although I have many modern day made as well.Any Chargers are among my favorites.Unmarked China brands and plastic bases are usually a turnoff.Recently I have started on vintage Siku and Schuco because I like the quality. Its very rare for me to purchase any new cars from a store shelf,I have actually left Treasure Hunts on the pegs because I didnt like the casting and or paint scheme.

Good news there is always time to learn more Yay!

I have a favorite type or year of car and not a certain brand. I don't care who makes it, if I like it and can afford it I buy it. :02:

I've enjoyed reading all the comments thanks for the posts guys. I too like different brands for different reasons but there is just something about the J.E. Toys that gets me. I am some what forced too as some of the brands mentioned haven't made vipers although the majority have.

My favorite brand is Tomica...my dad was in the Marines and stationed in Japan for about four years. I remember playing with my Tomys in the backyard of the base housing where we lived. (My second choice would be Majorette followed by Norev.)

After having given some thought, I think the two lines I am having the most fun exploring right now are Husky/Corgi jr...particularly those models that transitioned into the Hot Wheels lineup, and High Speed with all of its iterations (limiting myself to the 1/64ish models).

Hot Wheels is probably my overall favourite brand, although I have some issues with the level of realism at times it's offset by their low cost, availability and massive casting bank.

Tomica and MBX are probably tied for 2nd, since there's a number of casting from each I like. And they typically take HW wheels well which is important to me.

As far as premium brands go there's too many that are tied to have a favourite. If I must, I'll pick CM's although Greenlight is a close second.
