Volvo Estate; In standard red.

Ever get a model that exceeds your expectations? I've had a soft spot for Volvo station wagons for some time, but I never had the Volvo Estate in standard red until today. Not all of them have sunroofs, and sunroofs often are crooked or scuffed on one side. This one looks brand-new and has painted windshield wipers. The price tag bothered me (marginally) until I realized it was original too. The picture doesn't do it justice, but I had to share while still aglow from getting it.

Congrats on the great find! I'd have no hesitation on picking that up for $5.49, that's for sure!

I can't help but wonder if that is 5.49 British Pounds...which back then each Pound was about 2.25 American, making this (without a calculator) about $12 US at the time.

Pretty sure it's dollars; it came from Philadelphia.

"BREAK VOLVO" ? I don't think that that is possible to do! :P

PS: What cost $5.49 in 1979 would cost $17.09 in 2012.

I've been keeping a record of my toy car purchases since I was 13 years old in 1983... I clearly remember saving up my hard earned pocket money and splashing out on the K20 Peterbilt Wrecker in January that year. It cost me exactly 5.00 pounds, so I estimate the Volvo would have been somewhere around £3 back in the day. $5.49 in the US was probably a pretty good deal.

Ha, you kidding me?! I was looking to buy a car in the 1990's, and one was a very similar Volvo wagon. A neighbor friend worked at a used car dealership, so I went to look at their inventory. I wanted a wagon, and test-drove a similar squarish Volvo wagon. Darn thing would NOT even get up to highway speed of 55 MPH, I think it maxed at 45. Another friend of mine was also looking, and while we were eating at a Wendy's one day some time later, said she was wondering about those Volvos. I looked out the window up the street, and what is broken down at an intersection with the hood raised? That very SAME type of Volvo wagon! I pointed that out to her, and told her my story of the used Volvo wagon, needless to say she didnt' get one. I suspect, like many cars, there are some good, and some bad, but I saw more than one of those Volvo wagons broken down on the highway in that stretch of time, so I was glad I didn't buy one. Plus the parts for those carburetors are hideously expensive. Nope, wouldn't buy one. The one I WOULD buy would be a P1800 ES wagon, just as a toy. I love the look of those 60's wagons. But not as a daily driver.
