HOMER - Did you guys find one?

I had high hopes of finding a 'Homer' at Kday. My luck wasn't so good. I'm not going to lie. I wanted the casting simply because it is popular. I knew that it would be a good 'conversation piece'. :toy:

Being somewhat popular right now, I decided to do something a little different with the pics. Some of you guys might remember what I did with the '67 Camaro a few months back. I can't share the final product here as some serve side scripting is required but if you are interested, here is a link to the project -> Hot Wheels Homer - Diecast Photography

There was one in my box at Kday. I gave it to another collector. To me it screamed, 3 years from now finding it in a box and asking myself "why the heck did I buy this?", so I held it up, asked who wanted it, and 3-4 hands went up immediately. Away it went!

I love the Simpsons (well the OLD eps at least - I think the series died maybe 10 years ago). Are these really rare then?

Not at all rare ... Then again I consider Super Treasure Hunts common because many thousands of them were recently produced.

That said I would spend 99 cents for a Homer because I can relate to the TV show.

"Since its debut on December 17, 1989, the show has broadcast 541 episodes and the 25th season began on September 30, 2013. The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program"

that's the thing i guess, what should'nt be a rare model becomes "rare" because some people take more than they need and sell them online at ridiculous prices and i don't want to be forced to pay $10 or higher for something that should be a buck. i like these models from cartoons i watch when i was a kid and i collect them, like jetsons, scooby doo and flintstones, thats why i really want one of these, but not to the point where i have to pay 10x for it. frustrating though.

People by nature are impatient. In the Kday boxes were one or none as Homers go. Not sure what was in the gasser BODs as for a count per box of Homers, but not every Walmart got the BOD, in fact around here only 1 in 4 stores got the gasser assortment. Items such as this, first time released, are usually scarce the first release, and then plentiful in the next case assortment. Mattel has to justify the money spent on tooling and licensing, so PLENTY will be made for everyone. Just like the Herbie/enterprise/Scooby/kitt etc. Be patient, they will make more for $.99.

They are scarce now due to distribution, and being hoarded up (what few have hit the market), but I am betting 3 per case in the next cases that are released. Rare? Nothing HW makes is rare, there are just LOTS of collectors and high demand, in terms of numbers they don't do "rare" unless it's a variation/mistake. There has not been a "rare" variation since 2007, they are all 50/50 split now. 1 of 25 white lightnings are rare, 1 of 100k Homers, not so much.

Be patient.

Just like the angry birds, these will be everywhere in a couple of weeks. Then you'll be kicking yourself if you pay scalper prices.

Yes and no.

Take it from a person who has spent many hours on the road and gallons of gas.Sometimes its just worth the price to pay for a specific item on the secondary market. In other words it could be cost effective to simply buy online sitting here drinking a cup of coffee in my PJ's and have a car delivered to my door.

Anyways the key words already mentioned are "Be patient" ... In the long run its more fun.

True, same as with the mystery machine, collectors(and scalpers) in the Philippines bought every piece they see on the pegs, and other collectors were forced to buy at marked up price from them. I waited less than a couple of month and i found 1, though that one had a base not properly put on the body so i had to get another one which is ok. The next day i found one, and the following days more and more of them.

I wanna get one while im in the states though(just about a month more) because aside for HW cars being half the price here than in the Philippines, its actually harder to find one there because merchandisers hide popular models and they sell them to their contacts(collectors and scalpers) who gives them tips.

That's what I'm talking about. The Mystery Machine is a great example. They were impossible to find at first because of scalpers, but then they were everywhere. I saw one yesterday and passed because I already have 2 copies.

As for shopping online...no probs, I understand...I do a lot of it myself. But I don't see the sense in paying scalper prices *plus* postage for an item I can buy for a more normal price and shipping if I wait a month, or wait until I find myself in a big box store for some other errand and swing by the diecast aisle while I'm there anyway.

Exactly its the thrill of the hunt.

The term "Scalper" is heavy ... Remember the Indians ... As I mentioned before Mattel is a marketing genius therefore know how to play upon human behavior. They care about the numbers, the hobby not so much.

Great discussion all and Thanks Thread Master for the intro.

I rarely break my $10 max for a single car and it certainly would not be for a mass produced HW. The 'Homer' is a pretty neat casting alone (I never saw the episode the car appeared in). I would approach the situation same way I approach all my diecast buying decisions. If I want it, I'll wait until the dust settles or try to work out a trade with another collector who has found one. If that didn't happen I don't really need the casting anyway. In my part of the collecting world I can bring home a lot more than one car for $10.

Support your local demo derby.

At the end of the day the mainline HWs are still just a $1 model. The 'rare' must have yesterday models are far from it in terms of production. Even if you don't find a must have casting when it first debuts HWs typically will re-issue it in multiple batches and later on in subsequent years. See the Batmobile for example as it's been issued 4 times as a dollar model plus countless others as premium and convention versions. The Mystery Machine is another example used more than once in the dollar line. They have to recover the cost of making the /tooling/die/casting and to do so it has to be re-issued a few times at least.

I have to ask myself how badly would I have to want a new dollar model to pay 5x or 10x the original cost. At the $5-$10 price point I'd just assume have a model from M2 Machines, Greenlight or Auto World that had a metal base and opening parts plus lots of detailing. At the end of the day HWs aren't worth that much to me and I'd just assume to spend my money on premium models that have premium features to start with as opposed to chucking down $5 for a $1 HW.

This is true. I probably spent as much time and gas money hunting my second Civic as the first one I just bought from ePay.

Yeah very rarely would I pay that much for a HW model. I find that I am generally price insensitive between $1-$2. Like for example, today I picked up some for $2 each. I've paid $3 for stuff I really want, and up to $5 for a something like the MR2 which I am trying to collect all variants of. HW are so abundant that the patience thing becomes so true; you'll find one close to your price point eventually. And makes it all the more satisfying!

Would be interesting to know the production numbers.. I am sure millions upon millions. T-hunts and Supers as well. I assume Mattel doesn't divulge numbers.

there are those basic models that go up in prices though, like the ecto1, some fear it might happen to the homer too

99 out of 100 times if I wait it out for the newness to wear off I usually find most of the cars I'm looking for, especially .97 hotwheels. When they 1st started hitting TTP they were wanting 16.00 now they are down to 3.99. I'm gonna wait it out till I find one in the store. If I don't in a month or so then I might buy one on the secondary market. The money I save waiting it out I can spend on other cars I want.

The reason why The Homer will be rare:
Posted Image

i'm seeing more and more of these post, seldom do you see one person with just 2 or 3 pieces, if they see them on the pegs, they buy them all! the frustrating part is seeing them buy everything, and you can't even find one.

It's just like the Seagrave in 2012.

I wasn't going to pay a premium for it, so I searched high and low, until I found one for $1.
