The redesigned Corvette. From what I've seen online, some like the new look and others hate it. That said, it's always nice to see how it translates into die-cast. ![]() Here, we have the first two 2014 Corvettes in the 3" range, made by Maisto and Hot Wheels, respectively (Maisto on the left, Hot Wheels on the right). Both makers are in the same price range (around $1), and so, are no doubt competing for business in both the collector and children's market. ![]() Let's take a look at the front: Real car: ![]() Both models (again, Maisto on the left, Hot Wheels on the right) ![]() Based on the pictures above, one could say that the Hot Wheels is more accurate, based on the fact that the headlights are tampo'ed. However, the grille is blackened on the Maisto and the classic Corvette logo is more accurately proportioned. Let's take a look at the side of the car. ![]() Maisto: ![]() ![]() Hot Wheels: ![]() ![]() The inclusion of the mirrors is an important factor, as too often we see manufacturers omit this detail. Also, the paint seems to flow better on the Maisto model, as it appears that the paint on the Hot Wheels model is a bit too thick. The one thing that distracts the viewer from the Maisto model is the inclusion of unrealistic 'bling' wheels, that draw attention away from the good parts of this model. On the other hand, the wheels of the Hot Wheels look like the black alloy rims that are an available option on the real Corvette. That said, both cars are painted to depict the ‘torch red’ version of the Corvette, and I personally think that the Hot Wheels color is a bit too light, so the color advantage would have to go to the Maisto. Unfortunately, you cannot see this detail to great extent in the pictures. Lastly, there is a 'stingray' logo on the Maisto; that detail was exempted on the Hot Wheels model. Lastly, let's take a look at the rear of the car. ![]() ![]() One can see that the Maisto has the black accent that is found around the taillights, crisper detailing for both the 'Corvette' lettering and the flag, plus outlined tailpipes, like the real car. In terms of the brake lights themselves, the Hot Wheels seems to have the right shape, but the reverse lights are a bit too big. The Maisto's reverse lights seem to be a bit too small though. Overhead: ![]() Both models feature the unique roof that the new Corvette has, with the Hot Wheels showing more detail, while the Maisto just has a matte black roof. The Maisto's entire top piece is plastic, while the Hot Wheels has a plastic piece for the main roof, with a die-cast frame for the rear window. Furthermore, the Hot Wheels model has an interior, while the Maisto does not. Don't forget to vote in the poll above for which model you think is better, and please add your comments below! As always, thanks for the support, and enjoy! ![]() |

I went with the Hot Wheels. The Maisto does have a few things going for it like the blacked out grill, stingray logo and better tail lights, but I can't get past the way they did the roof where the whole roof, rear window and trunk are one piece. It leaves a gap that is rather unsightly in my opinion. I like the Hot Wheels and in particular the roof so I went for it, but probably would have chosen the Maisto if it weren't for the gap. |

I have never been able to accept the lack of interiors in the Maistos. I stopped collecting them. |

The Maisto All Stars version has an interior, and also has nicer wheels. |

I'll give HWs the edge on the stance and the nose of the car. Most of the tampo and painted on details look better for Maisto. The Mattel effort has a real proportion issue looking at the back rear fender but makes up for that with a 'carbon' like roof. Maisto has fail written all over the roof. Neither are really perfect by any means but for under a buck I'd go for the HWs. Too bad Matchbox didn't have this model. Think the details would have been better in that delivery. |
