I know this is a diecast forum and this is skirting the edge by being pressed steel, but TONKA is the only thing I have at the time American made. Hope it's OK to share.

$30 barn find, and half the price was shipping charge. This thing is nearly 20 lbs, no joke.

Just need Jack Rebney to hawk it. lol

I had one of those as a kid, had to share with my brothers (all 4). You are correct, that thing is a monster! Also came with a man and woman dolls about 4 inches high as I recall. The top picks up so you can play inside that brute.

I've seen a few copies of near mint examples of the Winnebago sell for upwards of $50-$70 at farm toy auctions.

Conestoga Company--Big Bang 60 MM Cannon

Posted Image

Sorry it's a little dirty, all the white stuff on it is reacted Bangsite. I showed it to family yesterday (and fired it) at Christmas, and haven't cleaned it out from that yet, as we're out of vinegar, which is recommended by Conestoga to clean it out, and I know from experience, it's all that works, specifically the apple cider kind which works much better than the clear vinegar.

It's a solid 2 pounds of cast iron. Only parts that aren't cast iron are the rubber tires (they were plastic on the early olive green models, which were introduced in 1958, the ones that are black with cast iron wheels were introduced in the twenties. I like the olive drab ones better), diecast breech block, steel striker, pressed steel breech cap, and brass knobs.

It produces a huge bang, and at night, a flame can be seen when it's fired. I've got to be careful with this thing. I've gotten earaches several times from it. And this is the entry model, there's two others that are both louder and bigger. I bought this one used off of Ebay in the summer, and it's probably 30 or 40 years old and could be as new as present day, as they used that tire style for ages. Conestoga still makes them today. In fact, the breech block (the part that makes it go bang) , wooden plug, and ammo all came from Conestoga, as they were missing from the one I bought.

It works by igniting gas produced by a reaction between Bangsite (calcium carbide) and water with a spark.

First of all, take out the breech block and fill it with water, but just make sure the little bowl for the Bangsite is plugged with the wooden plug. Reinsert the breech block Then, fill the little bowl at.. the back of the dragline with Bangsite. Then take out the breech block again. Then, take the spoon on the breech block, then scoop out some Bangsite. Reinsert breech block. Pull back on the plunger, push it back in, and BANG!

One of the best pressed steel toys I've seen. And at $30, it was within my pressed steel range, which is up to $50, though I've not spent that much one one yet, most I've spent was somewhere around $40. Calculating for inflation, this toy would have been about $70 in the '50s. So this was probably some kid's Christmas over 60 years ago.

It weighs about five pounds and has rubber tires, not the chintzy looking blow-molded plastic ones.

Penn Craft USA--Civil War Cannon

Frame is cast iron, wheels are diecast, barrel is brass.

This was purchased by my Dad on a trip to Gettysburg in the late 1970s.

It's a Carter-Tru Scale. I just found one in box on Ebay's suggestions from an item I recently purchased identified as such.

Thanks Cody, I'm very grateful you even remembered it when you'd seen it on ebay, and shared it here. :bowing:

I checked it out on ebay, and saved some of the pics, and I checked the brand in my collectors guide too, it seems the company sold to Ertl back in 1971, but then Ertl used some of the larger models for a series, but eventually closed the company. There was no mention of this series, or even size, most of what they did was larger seemingly pressed steel.

It's good to know the brand, I know I'd seen some loose ones with different rear sections but with the same cab, at a diecast shop in an antique mall some years back, and the lady seemed to think they were by Structo for a short time that they were trying some diecasting.
