Auto World's 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone.

Wikipedia.com

The Mercury Comet is an automobile produced by the Mercury division of the Ford Motor Company from 1960–1969 and 1971-1977 — variously as either a compact or an intermediate car.

The Comet was based on the compact Ford Falcon and later the Ford Maverick. As a Mercury, early Comets received better grade interior trim than concurrent Falcons, and a slightly longer wheelbase.

Beginning in 1966, the Comet grew from a compact to become a mid-sized car. It was now based on the same chassis as the Ford Fairlane intermediate (and the previous Mercury Meteor intermediate which was only offered in 1962-1963). These intermediate-sized cars used the same basic chassis as the original Ford Falcon and Mercury Comet compacts, but were stretched with longer wheelbases.

Hot Wheels and Johnny Lightning have '66 Fairlane castings and HW has a gasser version of the Comet but this is the 1st stock version of the mid size Mercury. For the money in the current market these are perhaps undervalued muscle classics.

Wikipedia.com

The new top-of-the-line series was the Comet Cyclone GT.

New engines available in the Comet for 1966 included a 390 cid V8 engine with a 2-barrel carburetor producing 265 hp (198 kW) at 4400 rpm, a 390 cid V8 engine with a 4-barrel carburetor producing 275 hp (205 kW), and 390 cid V8 engine that produced 335 hp (250 kW). The 335 hp 390 cid V8 engine was standard on the Cyclone GT and optional on other models. The Cyclone GT when equipped with an automatic transmission was referred to as the Cyclone GTA.

Not bad for a glorified Falcon. Looks particularly good in white. (I'd love to see a '64 and '65 though...buddy in High School picked up a '64, former drag racer, rebuilt the stock 260 and put it back on the road...and I *briefly* had a '65).

That's a really lovely no-frills model. I wish Auto World were available outside the U.S. - I would love to add some to my collection. The only ones (not many) I've seen over here have been at toy shows with dealers asking between 6 and 10 UK Pounds a piece (about $10 - $20 U.S.!!) Just out of interest, what sort of prices are you guys paying "off the shelf" for AW in the stores??

Thanks for the info. Happy collecting

I think overall the car looks good but the representation of it seems alittle off but I can't exactly put my finger on it for some reason.

:toy: Always great to see another Mercury in die cast that is not a '49 (nothing against those but there are so many of them).

My grandmother had a two door with the pillar, she had less than 50,000 miles on when she got her Maverick 4 door.

Walmart (the largest retailer) carries the basic line for $3, mid-line (the line that this model is from) for $4 (or $5), and the premium line for $6.

I'm not too sure about Toys R Us, but I believe that it is more expensive there. On-line dealers seem to have the prices at around $5 or 6 for the mid-line cars.

The model itself looks great, there is no doubt about that. An excellent choice for COTD!

Both Wal Mart and TRU are hit and miss with these models. One of my "area" Wally's has never had them - nor peg space for them. The others got the first series and now mostly empty pegs - but what else is new with the big box stores?

@ Mikey 1/64 - Wal Mart sells this mid tier line for $4.97 though I ordered mine from Milezone.

Many thanks for your responses everyone. Much appreciated.

The prices you guys are paying are so much cheaper than what a dealer over here would want, I could easily convince myself I should take a little trip across the pond and bring home a suitcase full of goodies for myself - would be cheaper in the long run (and WAY more fun :D)

Happy collecting

I want to like it, but like Firehawk said something seems off about this casting. I've seen several in Walmart on the pegs and in my opinion the headlights look huge compared to the rest of the casting.
