Majorette's 1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ is the SUV for today.

Wikipedia.com

The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is a compact SUV that was developed and produced by the Jeep division of American Motors, and continued to be built and marketed by Chrysler after 1987. It shared the name of the original full-size SJ model, but without a traditional body-on-frame chassis. With a novel light-weight uniframe design , it set the stage for the modern sport utility vehicle (SUV). The XJ's innovative appearance and sales popularity spawned important imitators - including unibody (monocoque) designs - as other automakers began to notice that this model began replacing regular cars.

Designs of the compact-size XJ Cherokee date back to 1978 when a team of American Motors (AMC) and Renault engineers drew several sketches. Clay models were based on the then current full-size SJ Cherokee. Early sketches of the XJ Cherokee had a European influence, and most of the styling cues were done by AMC engineers under the direction of Richard A. Teague, Vice President of Design.

Noticing that General Motors was developing a new two-door S-10-based Blazer, AMC decided to develop an entirely new four-door model in addition to a two-door version. American Motors' Vice President of Engineering, Roy Lunn, designed what is known as the Quadra-Link suspension that limited rollovers.[7] Renault's François Castaing developed the drivetrain using a much smaller engine than normally found in 4WD vehicles and reduced the weight of the new model.[8] It is described "as the first small crossover SUV in the U.S.," with "plenty of the Jeep toughness (and a straight-6 engine) built in."[6]

Here's a recent flea market score complete with a water tanker trailer.

The XJ Cherokee introduced in 1984 was the first Jeep with a ladder-boxed chassis integrated into a unibody construction rather than a body-on-frame construction. Designs of the XJ Cherokee date back to 1978 when a team of American Motors (AMC) and Renault engineers drew several sketches. A few clay models were based on the existing SJ Cherokee. Early sketches of the XJ Cherokee had an European influence, and most of the styling cues were done by AMC engineers under the direction of Richard Teague. The ongoing debate suggests that Renault sketch artists were involved right after the 1979 partnership with AMC. Noticing that General Motors was developing a new two-door S-10 based Blazer, AMC decided to design an entirely new four-door model, but worried about rollovers Gerald C. Meyers hired one of Ford's best engineers, Roy Lunn to design what is known as the Quadra-Link suspension. François Castaing developed the drivetrain using a much smaller engine than normally found in 4WD vehicles and reduced the weight of the new model.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Nice. With all the talk about Maisto on the MBX pages (LOL), this reminds me they do make some fun diecasts.

I have this one - was glad to see Majorette use the Jeep casting as a fire vehicle. The little water trailer has been around for a number of years - attached quite often to the Range Rover fire vehicle. :)

This model is a very nice one. Somewhere, I have this in a Sheriff livery, minus the light bar.

The Majorette Cherokee is a cherished model in my collection. I have several versions, including civilian, police, sheriff, military, and fire.

I only recently picked up a Majorette Cherokee, the police version, but I had several as a kid, including this one (or a different red fire version, don't remember well enough), the police version, and the stock one. This is a contender for the next model I might try and complete. I finally finished getting all the JL Cherokee's, so this would be a logical step. I like that this one is an early XJ versus the facelifted version that JL did. My first car was a 1988 Cherokee, I put a 3" lift on it and 31" tires and beat it to within an inch of it's life. It did things off road that you wouldn't think possible and somehow managed to even go places Wrangler's couldn't. I actually saw it the other day for the first time in over 10 years and it was still ticking. Now that I know it is still running and still local, I'm seriously considering trying to track it down to offer to buy it back.
