The BMW 5-Series is an executive/mid-size luxury car manufactured by German automaker BMW since 1972. The car, now in its sixth generation, is sold in sedan and touring body styles. It is BMW's second best-selling model after the 3-Series and in 2010 produced about 50% of the BMW's profits.

The BMW E39 is the fourth-generation 5-Series, produced from 1995-2004. The design draws heavily from the E38 7 Series in body construction and electronic technology and the wheelbase grew by 68 millimetres (2.7 in) and overall length by 55 millimetres (2.2 in) over the E34.

Car and Drive (sic) often featured the E39 in its "10 Best list". The E39 BMW 5-series was considered the benchmark of its class and Consumer Reports gave the 2001 530i its highest car rating ever.

In my ongoing hunt to find 1/64 scale High Speed castings before they disappear, I stumbled on this nice example of a contemporary BMW. Not my usual cuppa tea, but I gotta give credit where credit is due...it is a nice model for the scale and price. Too bad High Speed is now a memory.

This generation 5 series, for better or worse, truly revolutionized modern automotive styling. The shape of the trunk and headlights were ahead of it's time, and those elements have trickled into just about every other modern sedan. I remember when this came out, people vilified Chris Bangle (anyone remember the term, Bangle Butt?), but I think this car has only gotten better with age. If you see one driving on the road, it still looks like a new car, and most people would still assume it was a current BMW. This looks like a very well done model, and one that I wish Greenlight would have carried over when they took over the High Speed line.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
The actual car does nothing for me, but I'd definitely pick up this one if I saw it on a peg!

It took me a while to obtain one of these, but I finally found a silver one earlier in the year. Since it had no grille tampo, I had to detail it with a Sharpie, so I someday hope to find one like this with the proper detailing. Excellent casting, and indeed a shame that Greenlight didn't carry it over (same goes for the Audi A6/Q7).

That actually raises some questions I have as well. The High Speed tooling was far too good to see go to waste. I understand Greenlight got some of them, but not fully sure what all they did get. (The old R.D. issues minus the Tbird, and the VWs, but did they get anything else?) High Speed had such a wide variety of well detailed if somewhat simplistic cars from around the world, not only America...Euro, Asian, Eastern Europe. And they covered everything from mundane everyday cars to exotics, light trucks and ambulances...in 1/64ish scale. Including the 1/43 and 1/87 scales they made an even broader variety still! Many of their models spanned all three scales.

I have not been so impressed by the wide breadth and depth of any other diecast maker (bar none!). High Speed did an amazing job of truly being a world wide and world class automotive diecast maker...and it would be a shame to learn the tooling has been destroyed or scrapped. I really, really hope some other diecast makers picked up whatever tooling is suitable to their lines to keep these models alive...or the out chance that maybe Greenlight has them and doesn't know what to do with them yet, leaving the hope alive that some of these may yet see the light of day again.
