ERTL American Muscle's 1960 Ford Starliner is the car for today.

The Starliner was the sporty fastback version of the flagship Galaxie line of full-size Fords. Produced in 1960 and 1961 it offered a great platform for NASCAR teams to build their race cars. They were produced in limited numbers and due to their racing applications few survivors exist today.

The 1960-1961 Ford Galaxie Starliner & Sunliner were the raciest of Ford's bigger-than-ever early-1960’s big cars. The all-new 1960s Galaxies were some six inches longer, almost five inches wider, and nearly 200 pounds heavier. Graceful styling helped hide the heft, however with a sloped hood, simple grille, straight A-pillars, clean chrome-edged fenderlines, and modest horizontal tailfins (nodding to Chevy's 1959 "batwings").

Characterized by their thin roof pillars, fastback styling and slippery aerodynamics, they symbolized 1960s jet age design. While the '60 & '61 body styles share only their roof lines and chassis, they did share the same overall styling concept.

The base engine in 1960 & 1961 was the aging 292 CID Y-block V-8, with the optional 352 motor that was originally introduced in 1958. In 1961 Ford engineers answered the cry for more power offering the new Thunderbird 390 cubic-inch motor in 3 versions with the top line offering in 375 horsepower. There was also a dealer option for a 6V-401 HP that came with a three-2 barrel manifold and carb setup in the trunk to be installed by the dealer or the buyer.

The black version took Car Of The Week honors years ago, back on week #9, and I prefer this silver version to that one...maybe this one has what it takes to repeat history?

Having moved and most my collection is in storage but if memory serves me right there was also a red one with a continental kit. One of Fords best looking cars IMO.

You are correct, and that red one had a variation, being released with or without rear fender skirts!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Amazing, for the age of the casting.

Instant memories of the 1960 Ford ...I had one of these as a college car, and also my part time job. It wasn't the Starliner, but a 4DOOR SEDAN WITH 6 CYLINDER 3 SPEED STIK ON THE COLUMN!! You think you know how hard driving a BIG car is like?? You should have seen how long it took me to learn how to park that aircraft carrier, especially after having driven a Renault Dauphine!! This car belongs in the Land Yacht series by Autoworld!

This casting of the Starliner didn't quite get the roof line proportion correct...it is to high hatted and spoils the fastback rear roof line. I will be so happy to see M2 or Autoworld have a go at this one and get the "look" of this baby!! Before that happens, congrats to any of you who have one of these by ERtl, I wish I did.

The roof's plastic. I think the plan was to make a Sunliner convertible, but they never got around to it.

I have one version of the red one and the silver one. I would like to get my hands on the black one and the 1/18 scale version too!
