Car of the Day for August 2, 2014 is the Muscle Machines 1961-1967 Ford Econoline Van (Jesse James)

Based on the compact Ford Falcon, the first Ford Econoline was introduced for the 1961 model year. Sized roughly to compete with the Chevrolet Corvair 95 (Greenbrier Sportswagon) and Volkswagen Type 2, which was 172.3 in (4,376 mm) long. It was originally offered as a cargo van, an eight-passenger van with three rows of seats (which carried the Ford Falcon name) and as a pickup truck. A 165 lb (75 kg) counterweight was fitted over the rear wheels to balance the front-heavy vehicle; this was sometimes removed by later owners. The implementation of situating the driver on top of the front axle with the engine near the front wheels is called, in the US, a "cab over" short for cab over engine configuration. In Europe it is called a "forward control" vehicle. The body styling borrowed heavily from the, smaller, UK produced, Thames 400E which had been in production since 1957 and the 1956-64 Jeep Forward Control.

Instead of the rear-mounted engine used by Volkswagen and Chevrolet, the first E-Series had a flat nose with the engine between and behind the front seats. Early models had a 144 CID inline 6-cylinder engine with a three-speed manual transmission. Later models had a 170 CID or 240 CID engines with a three-speed manual or automatic transmission. It was an immediate success with utilities like the Bell Telephone System.

In its first year, 29,932 standard vans, 6,571 custom Econoline buses, 11,893 standard pickups and 3,000 custom pickups were made. The success of the Econoline led to its layout adopted in 1964 by the Chevrolet Van/GMC Handi-Van and Dodge A100; it would also be utilized internationally and sold by Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota, with microvans called the Subaru Sambar and the Daihatsu Hijet.

In rural Canada, where automobile dealers were scarce, the Econoline was sold as a Mercury alongside the M-Series truck lineup. Only the first generation of Econolines were sold as Mercurys.

This model has proven very popular, and is quite difficult to find at anything resembling reasonable prices...so I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found this one recently.

Somewhere along the line, someone more knowledgeable than I told me that the details showed this to be a 1966 Econoline. I don't remember if the '66 was the only one it could be, or if there was a range of years, but I do remember that roof design and maybe something to do with the grille made this one represent a '66.

Here are mine:

I remember reading that this van, the 1:1, belonged to one of the guys that worked for Jesse James. The seat covers on this model have the familiar FTW on them, to reflect Jesses attitude, I guess.

A great choice. And my favorite van.

As for a 66 model.
Maybe. There is nothing on it that says 1966 tho. The roof detail does say not 61 or 62, that's it. The front grille was exactly the same 61-67. Some very early 1961's did have some reflectors that weren't carried forward, and the dashboard had some different details added or removed through the years. But, none of those are cast into this. Oh, and the 1967's had back-up lamps that are not there on the model.
The rear bumper doesn't fit it, that rear bumper was 1961-62 only on the vans, through '67 on the pickups.
Yep could be a '66, but could be a '63-65 also. In fact, my '65 is this one's twin, flat black paint and all. Not light one the roof tho, and no custom front seats, and no low-rider mode (unfortunately).

That would be Chopper Dave...and that is only what I learned second hand.

Nice van. Wouldn't want to see this one attempting to plow through snow drifts, but a very cool diecast.
